so to get this straight, from someone who's signed up....

You can get the $9/yr deal ONLY on the lowest level hosting, right? (Cause i'd pay $20/yr for the second level O
After the first year, you pay $9/mo, for the same hosting services.
you DO NOT NEED TO GET REFERRALS.... right? right?

There's no catch with having to get people to sign up under you or anything? really? none at all?

How exactly does the referral thing work?

Thanks

skisteven1,

1) No referrals are required, I repeat you DO NOT need to get anyone to sign up.
2) Just use the coupon code and you get a domain + web hosting for $9.24 for the first year.
3) After that first year who knows what the price will increase to.
4) Repeat after me. "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR"
Read this and this, read both entire threads.

DreamHost probably isn't going anywhere but don't expect world class web hosting when you're only paying $9.24/yr.

Hm.. Anyone else having problems? Seems like my site has already been down three times and I just got it yesterday. I know you get what you pay for, but three times in a day?

Thanks for the tips Ross. Normally, I'd totally agree with you about getting what you pay for.

On the other hand though, I'm willing to toss 10 bucks out there and see how the thing runs. From what I can tell at WHT, people seem to be pretty happy with them. And if I find I'm dissatisfied after a month, I've only lost 10 bucks, so I'm not too worried.

Thanks again for the info and recs though.

[EDIT]
The one thing you didn't answer though -- does anyeone know if you can sign up for the larger packages with this deal?

...I figure as long as I'm going to try them out, I might as well do it right

Why not try it yourself and find out?

All you need is the coupon code, go for it.

You will see the total before you are asked for your credit card number, so there is no risk to you.

A few people have asked how good/reputable DreamHost is, my site is hosted with them, and I've never had any trouble. I love it. Best host I've ever used, and I get a hell of a lot of space and everything

Apparently the domain I want (my father's business name) has been taken by one of those random sites (dating, business, search, mortgage, whatever). Seems odd because it's not any sort of normal name for a business.

Anyway, is there a way to get that domain from one of these bastards? I can see their contact info from whois and its somebody/company in KR (Korea?). Ugh.

You're basically screwed. If you show any interest in that domain they will just keep renewing it every year. They'll probably ask for some outrageous ransom fee of $2,000 - $5,000 - $20,000

So unless you REALLY NEED that domain and can afford it, I would give up and move on.

We all hate this "squatting" business.

But, it is pretty easy (and common) to append "inc" or "co" or "corp" or some such to the domain name to beat the bastards at their own game.

My local ABC affiliate channel 5 TV station uses "www.thebostonchannel.com"
"the" as a preface doesn't seem to phase anyone, either.

Also, most of the web registrars (eg: www.1and1.com, www.GoDaddy.com, ...) are very hot to lease a domain name to you, so they commonly also propose alternate likely names based on the initial request.

It'll at worst revert to the regular price of $10/month for one year or $8/month for two years.

MISLEADING. You can overpay for stuff (ripoff), and you can underpay for stuff (hot deal), or you can buy expensive quality goods (luxury), or you can buy inexpensive cheap goods (walmart).

In this case, Dreamhost for <$10/YEAR is an extremely hot deal.

From my own dreamhost site's system status page:

Service Status 1 Day 1 Week 1 Month All Time
http Up for 2 mons 20 days. 100% 100% 100% 99.2283%
smtp Up for 3 mons 4 days. 100% 100% 100% 99.9731%
pop Up for 3 mons 4 days. 100% 100% 100% 99.9731%
telnet Up for 3 mons 6 days. 100% 100% 100% 99.9917%
ssh Up for 3 mons 6 days. 100% 100% 100% 99.976%
ftp Up for 3 mons 6 days. 100% 100% 100% 99.9917%

Yeah, the hosting is great for me. Like I said, I had one problem, the site didn't respond for about 10 seconds, and it could have been my ISP (Comcast, they're always having problems it seems. If it's not DNS, it's some other major outage).

I'm curious as to know what happens after the first year also. I've got a Telnap MegaByte account from some deal found on ATHD for $11/year for as long as I keep my account active

From the Financial Arrangements section of the Dreamhost Terms of Service:

"At the end of the contract term, the contract will automatically renew for successive thirty (30) day periods (or three (3) or six (6) or twelve (12) or twenty-four (24) month periods, depending on length of pre-payment) indefinitely until canceled in writing. After the first 97 days a canceled account will be canceled before the next payment is due and no more billing will occur nor will any payment be refunded, even for unused portions."

I mentioned before that there is an automatic "end service" function under Billing > Service in the admin control panel. Under "Modify Service," you can enter a date to automatically terminate the service.
