If I ran Chicago I would tax every piece of email and text message at $0.50/each.

BTW, just because video rental stores close up doesn't mean the property owners cease existence. Only an idiot (from Chicago government) would think that. Last I checked the property owner usually leases the property to said business and pays taxes on property whether or not a business is running on it.

sounds like its a good thing I did not end up in Chicago and ended up in Texas instead.

I still cant believe how badly Chicago is messing up the current trend of people moving into big cities. They have so much potential but are taxing the people they do have and could potentially have away.

Chicago’s Disappearing Middle Class
Borrowing data from education scholar Sean Reardon and sociologist Kendra Bischoff, Daniel Hertz calculated where the median family income of each Census tract fell relative to the entire metropolitan area. Orange tracts are ones where the median family income is 0-45% of the median for Chicago as a whole (struggling families), dark green tracts are ones where the median is 200% or more (resource rich families). Grey is, literally, middle class.

For simplicity’s sake, here is 1970 and 2012 right next to one another. Notice that the 1970 map involves a lot more grey (middle class) and the 2012 map involves a lot more green (rich) and especially orange (poor).
Chicago has a wealth of resources. And with the right job, you could find it very enjoyable. (I still have family there.)

That said, you can look at the image above and see how polarized it is becoming. Trend is middle Class leaving... Both Rich and Poor expanding...

How that plays out in the future is yet to be seen...

Though, from my perspective, the status quo can't hold...

"All of this largesse is a result of a high-tech boom in Northern California that's pulling in record revenues. So the Democratic-dominated legislature and Gov. Jerry Brown decided to treat the funds like manna from heaven and spend it all.

This always happens in the boom-and-bust cycle of California public finances, and Golden State lawmakers have once again proved they have the shortest memories in the history of American politics."

Cant disagree with that, when tech takes its next downturn the state is fucked.

Looks like they're thinking about a city income tax for residents and businesses. Let the good times roll!

If you read between the lines this is really the mayor sending a signal to business interests to start pressing the governor and legislature get something (anything) done to fund the government and address the pension issues. Imposing a tax like this would require the legislature to authorize it, the governor to sign it, a notoriously business friendly mayor to support it, and then the city council to adopt it. It has about the same odds of happening as me waking up to Chris Hemsworth in my bed.
