And without the weather of California so it has zero redeeming qualities.
We also have a giant budget surplus that is either being reinvested into education, anti-poverty efforts, or saved. Governor Moonbeam is doing a nice job and the Democrats didn't go crazy with the super majority they had for a couple years. We still have major water problems, but that's not a liberal/conservative issue.

Wut?

He needed a large urban environment with lots of tall buildings. There are only about two places you can go for that and he shot in both of them.

Only two? You haven't been to many major American cities have you?

Chicago and IL are fucked. though the politicians only give a shit about chicago. There was some talk of raising state taxes and having it go into Chicago for outstanding pensions. though that seem to have died down recently.

trust me if i could get out of this fucking state i would.

I think he may have meant gothic architecture, which New York and Chicago are probably the best large cities that lend themselves to portraying Gotham City.

They tried this maneuver in Massachusetts, which loves to tax the hell out of people. It was passed into law, but very people understood what the hell the new tax was and to whom it applied. But Mass has a lot of high tech companies and they understood. And High Tech Council and the companies themselves conveyed to the legislature that they would end up losing revenue, because they could leave the state along with their high paying jobs. The legislature and the governor reconsidered and repealed the law. Kind of a don't bite the hand that feeds you move. Illinois like Greece has fewer options.

exactly, they can only get a company to collect sale taxes on their behalf if and only if the very company has physical presence in that state.

Most of them actually. If you need something to stand in for Gotham it's NYC or Chicago. The other alternatives are too small or to stubby.

'Cloud tax' jacks up Netflix bills in Chicago

The new charge is separate from sales tax, and could add 9 percent to customers' bills.

The city of Chicago is enforcing a new and unprecedented tax on cloud services, possibly raising the cost of Netflix, Spotify, and other forms of streaming entertainment for residents.

It's probably an extension of the current entertainment tax that is levied against pretty much every brick & mortar business.

If you go to an event around Chicago, if you look at all the taxes and surcharges, all added up it's roughly 25% extra you pay.

Correct. The city has also closed a number of loopholes in recent years that had certain entities paying less of the 9% (stadiums, cable companies, etc).

Admittedly, the Mayor is not without his fans:
Mr Clinton thought he was terrific...: “I liked him because people said I was too young to run for president and I was too ambitious and Rahm made me look laid-back and passive.”
Netflix tax is estimated to raise 12 million dollars. That's not going to have a huge impact on a multibillion dollar deficit...

Still, with an inverse relationship between taxes and population, the Mayor is in a very tough position.

Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

If you drive a car, I'll tax the street
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet

Taxman!
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

Don't ask me what I want it for (Aahh Mr. Wilson)
If you don't want to pay some more (Aahh Mr. Heath)
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

And you're working for no one but me
Taxman!

RIP GH, that was one of his best..

Just one more reason that north of I-80 should be its own state. People up there don't think like the rest of us.

The article's chief specific complaint it that the state is spending on HSR but not roads. Building more roads isn't going to relieve congestion in the state, it's been tried time and again (LA still gives it a go once in a while). Induced demand simply fills the new capacity and congestion isn't alleviated while costing a bundle.

What happens when a state tries to tax this while your city already charges 9%?

What happens when I pay for Amazon Prime for the shipping only, having no intention to use the streaming music / streaming video services?

9% on value of product/services you purchase through amazon since it uses a cloud.

Now if Amazon says they are now using Galactic computing, you are no longer subject to taxes.

Netflix and providers need to upgrade and call it Galactic computing so they are no longer subject to a cloud tax.

Tax applies to streamed content fees only afaik, not outright purchased.
