I'll spend the 20 minutes once per year it takes to change oil to not be locked in to one brand :awe:

Although I'm glad to see that the oil delivers smooth braking:

A key test is whether the oil delivers smooth handling, braking and accelerating. Castrol said the technology "functioned smoothly" in a test in which a vehicle went from 62 miles per hour to a full stop in 1.6 seconds. The system has also been tested with everything from cheap minicars to racecars.

Interesting take on what appears to be essentially a dry sump system, just rendered as a pre-packaged plug-in module/unit.

I can't see a need for this at all. The oil change interval is a good time to take a little time and look the vehicle over. There's no need for an expensive 90 second oil and filter change.

Bright readers from bobistheoilguy have pointed out:

- She gives a thumbs up to the oil check engine light coming on... well she is a blond.

- Article states, 'A key test is whether the oil delivers smooth handling, braking and accelerating.'... then all credibility went out the window, even though we know they want to test that the system handles sloushing about just fine.

- Car manufacturers make big money getting you to bring your car to them and up on a lift during free oil changes. I doubt many will actually use it even though I think it's a great idea.

I remember when the Fram quick drain system came out, even had one on my old Toyota. The novelty wore off pretty quickly, and never installed it on any vehicle since. I still have a weird compulsion to change my own oil, but just get the engine hot and let it drain for an hour or two while I do something else.

I usually go longer than the 3K recommended by oil and filter manufacturers and stick to the 5K recommended by the people who actually made my vehicle. Up to 182K now on my Odyssey, so I don't think this system is marketed towards someone like me.

Im sure a fill and drail plug will be added by the aftermarket within a week after this is released.

As soon as that video began, I started twitching. The red oil light does not mean it's time to change your oil! It means you have low oil pressure, and you need to pull over and shut off that engine immediately if you want a chance of saving it.

Idiots.

The real issue is that car manufacturers are increasingly deliberately designing cars to be difficult to service without a dealer, even when you are just changing a light bulb. Why design the engine bay around making oil changes easier/quicker when you are designing everything else there to do the opposite?

There are laws in the USA that specifically target auto manufacturers so that they can't lock out aftermarket part competitors using patents and copyrights. They can stop a competitor from building another car with the design, but they can't stop another oil/filter manufacturer from making a drop-in replacement for this.

Lexmark sued a replacement ink cartridge maker for copying the code on their copyrighted lockout chip but Lexmark LOST due to these laws (even though they are aimed at the auto parts industry).

Have a Fumoto on every recent car I've owned. Makes changes easy. Don't see how this could make it easier.

This.

Hell, I can even reach my Fumoto valve from the top of the engine bay, and with warm 0w15 or 0w20, it's all out in 90 seconds. The most annoying part of the process is finding where I stashed my funnel.

I am getting one of these for my next car... Awesoooome.

I lost all faith in the journalist at this point. I assume they meant if the oil delivery system functioned properly under extreme conditions that may apply g-forces to the oil, but they sound so ridiculous with how they wrote that.

Sounds cool, except that it will probably cost twice as much as the oil/filter do currently and if it gets integrated into the mainstream cars, consumers will lose their choice.

Edit: Ahh, you beat me to it.

I would think the OEMs would develop their own brand of oil box for it, and push the marketing heavily to convince as many consumers to buy theirs because "it's the same brand" as their car.

Here's how I see this shaking out and I believe that we are seeing the future of oil changes with this system. It's all going to center around the EPA.

The environmental "mess" associated with oil changes will be virtually eliminated. No more draining with the resultant splashing, etc. No storage issues of waste oil with chances of spillage. No oily rags. No direct contact to cancer causing waste oil. No burning of waste oil for heating purposes. Recycling is simplified through standardization and ease of transportation.

Lawmakers in California will be bought off first. It will become mandated in x number of years there and in conjunction with it, do it yourself oil changes with drain pans and filters will become illegal. If your car does not have one of these systems, your choice will be to retrofit it, (which will be virtually impossible for most cars) or to have your oil changes performed by a state authorized oil change center. There will of course be oil changes performed in secret by individuals but the vice will be tightened to the point that you will have no means to dispose of the oil. Just try and sell your house when you've got all that waste oil stored and the EPA classifies it as a toxic waste site. Many of us saw the outlawing of DIY oil changes coming and these systems will be what drives that.

But you'll still be able to do your own oil change it's just that you will buy the oil and filter module with a core charge and return the one you remove for recycling. You'll be able to do it right in the parking lot of the store though. Think of the gasoline saved driving home and back to swap out the module and then returning it. Think of the reduction of emissions associated with those miles. The people that obsess over such things will absolutely love this.

All new cars are going to be dry sump cars. That's essentially what this system is. Engines will be able to be lowered in these cars. Lower profile front ends could be one result with better aerodynamics. Better handling with lower centers of gravity, belly pans could become more prevalent, the pluses will be considerable and very enticing to both car makers and the EPA alike.

This isn't going to be an option in our future it's going to be mandated.

Interesting theory but the .gov won't "outlaw" existing cars. If this happened they'd just let them go away gracefully. Most people go to mechanics to get their oil changed and those that don't generally take the oil to be recycled (eventually). I doubt very much ends up in the water table because people are too damn lazy to recycle it - if they're that lazy they wouldn't be changing it themselves. I probably have 20 quarts of dirty oil in my garage but I do take it to the local trash dump, which has an oil recycle bin, about once a year.

I'm a car guy but I'd love to have this system, assuming it's able to do an effective job of not keeping a lot of dirty oil in the system. I would imagine that even if it did keep some, it would dissolve into the new clean oil enough that it would be negligible. I change the oil on two of my cars because I just don't like quickie oil change places (I find them a hassle, I hate waiting, and I hate trying to be upsold on every little item - just change my damn oil) but I certainly don't love getting under the car so if I could swap everything out in the AutoZone parking lot, that's be fabulous.

I didn't see any filter getting changed unless that's part of the package. No thanks, I'll wait the 5 minutes and drain my own oil and use the 5 min. to check around under the hood for the hose's and belts condition as well.

Seems like this will end up like DRM for cars. But you save 18 1/2 minutes every 10,000 miles, so you can get back to important things like looking at porn and cat pictures on reddit even faster.

You can be 100% guaranteed that the manufacturers will use microchips to lock individual 'cells' to vehicles, so a Ford cell only works in a Ford, etc.

You know why in-vehicle infotainment systems don't work well with phones? It's because the big 3 have actually spent money locking android and apple systems OUT of the cars, because they want you to pay the big 3 for apps. They had google maps and other stuff working with Ford Sync in 2011, but they quickly killed it and have never let it return unless you're paying Ford for their service.

If you think they'll let this go without locking you in and monetizing it, you're nuts.

Fuck it. It's a sad day when I look at a definite improvement and don't want it because you know the corporations are going to fuck you with it.
