I'm really thinking that I'll be moving to Austin next year. I've heard nothing but good things... but are there any bad things i should know about? I already know about the blistering hot summers...

How's the crime there?

Judging by his signature and posts in P&N, I don't think he'd mind.

its from the movie 'road trip'. tom green's character keeps mistaking the two and it actually leads to dire consequences.

That's a start.

Summers can be very bad (hot + humid).... and summer lasts from about May through September.

Real estate prices are pretty high, but not crazy high yet. To get reasonably priced real estate, you're looking at living further out of the city, where it's basically strip-mall suburbia.

People in Austin are barely hippies...only compared to the rest of Texas, they are.

It's all relative. Compared to Boston or SF or something, it's really cheap. Compared to most cities of comparable size, I suspect it's very high. You can find some prices online and see what you think.

I grew up in the Austin area.
Good:
Very Nice Parks system with lots of jogging and biking trails
Lots of Friendly people.
Poltical climate is very different from most of the rest of Texas
Still very tech oriented, IBM, Apple, 3m, Raytheon, Dell, Samsung and many others have plants or offices in or arround the city.
There is a Fry's Electronics
6th Street
Alamo Drafthouse
Leslie, the worlds only famous homeless transvestite who almost became the mayor of Austin.
Worlds best BBQ is in a little town called Elgin about 30 miles away.

Bad
Its hot, and humid, even in the winter.
Traffic is awful, among the worst in the nation for gridlock.
The environuts have run amok, they part of the reason traffic is so bad.
Alot of Austin's cool funkyness is gone and has been replaced by trendy yuppieness.
The public transportation system sucks donkey balls.
The closest places for most concerts of any magnitude is San Antonio or Houston

I miss home, but frankly alot of the things I loved have changed or are gone.
If you can stand the heat and traffic you will probably be happy there.

I sort of forget most cities don't have this or something like it. I almost refuse to see movies anywhere else these days.

This is true but I can't understand why. Given the college population I'd think most bands would come through, but a lot just hit SA/Dallas/Houston.

It is over rated.

I consider that a bad thing just like SoCal (yeah, it even gets its own name because it is so over rated).
