911 or Tsunami

After 911 the entire nation was stunned and devastated, as was a good portion of the world. About 3000 were killed on 911, while the death toll for the tsunami is spiraling past 125,000 (!) I get the feeling that the tsunami is nowhere near as gut-wrenching and traumatic as 911 was for Americans. 911 was 3000 murders, though, so that definetely is a factor.

So which do you think is the 'bigger,' or should I say worse, disaster? The tsunami or 911?

Both get a big from me, though.

What's worse: Having the hubris to suggest a comparison or lacking the heart to actually consider it?

I would say 9/11 was more of an economical disaster, while the terrible events of late are more of a social disaster. Please don't flame me for saying that, I know everyone is still very sensitive about 9/11.

Tsunami; no question about it.

9/11 was broadcast on everything including cellphones so that is why many people see it as so grandious in its effects. With this thing, peopel are STILL dying.

One was an act of terrorism, which makes it lamentable, but jeez, death is death; I don't really think you can 'rank' disasters like that.

9/11 was scary. "what's going to happen now"
Tsunami is "waves are over I'm alive or i'm dead"

I consider them two entirely different things. In one you have a group of "men" (I use the term loosely) actively trying to hurt people. On the other, you have an uncaring god washing away thousands with a piss.

Totally different situation. Of course one would feel more attached to a "local" disaster than one on the other side of the world.

9/11 changed the world.

the tsunami also changed the world and affected much more people directly.

both are completely different however

Going by death toll and destruction, of course the tsunami was the bigger disaster.

Which one is worse though? It gets kinda blurry. While 9/11 had a much smaller body count (but by no means small mind you), these people like you said were murdered. Natural disasters occur, like we have just seen. But they were not done on purpose. All of those people deaths were not planned out. Now I'm not trying to downplay the tsunami by any means, but I would consider 9/11 to be more horrific.

That's precisely what I was saying. Here is an American suggesting that the "tsunami is nowhere near as gut-wrenching and traumatic as 911 was for Americans." I haven't the words...

Their economies are ruined? Most of their GDP came from tourism...If not most a LOT

The world, not their country.
