I am liking the way my system is working now after just installing XP Pro fresh last week. I'm wondering what issues I'd be vulnerable to without doing the update. I'm on broadband cable behind a router, and I'm running Norton Utilities 2003 also (primiraly for email). I've runs shields up and I'm in stealth mode on all ports, and my IP address is invisible. I've heard some people have problems with IE6 after the SP1 update?? Like what?? What security issues am I really worried about??

Although there are always risks involved in a software upgrade it is typically a wise move to service pack your OS. The list of fixes is literally hundreds of items long. Some of them are major like support for USB 2.0 etc..

Unless you have a specific reason NOT to I would recommend not only service pack 1 but all the windows updates that have come out since. For security if nothing else.

If you don't want to update, please send me your IP address...I could always use another server

I have experienced some glitches since updating to SP1. Personally, I wish I had NOT, but then again I am on dial-up.

UPDATE:
Based on everyone positive input, I decided to see what I must done incorrectly. So, I went back to www.microsoft.com and did Windows Update again and there was 1 new driver and a few WinXP fixes that needed to be installed. Now everything seems to be fine.

My update to SP1 was flawless, and it also fixes several serious security flaws in the OS. At least one of these fixes is NOT available as a seperate HotFix. Personally, I recommend the update. If you want I can look up the specific security issue when I get home from work. LMK.

I installed it on 56k dial-up,you`ve broadband so will be a breeze, anyway the simple answer is yes it`s recommended you do so,when I last checked the SP1 bug fix list there was about 200 various fixes.

I`ve yet to have a single BSOD since install of SP1.

I just installed it- seems fine. I am always hesitant to install "a fix" when it appears nothing is broken. This is the most stable OS I've had yet! No GFP's and no BSOD's. The eye candy slows things down a hair, but I can live with that if I've got stability. Besides there are a billion tweaks to play with XP out there. Thanks all.

My favorite part about my copy of WinXP Pro is that I got it for under $50 shipped to my door and it's 100% legit. BOOYAH!!!

As for whether or not to get SP1...I say why not? You JUST installed the OS, and as long as you haven't installed a lot of other things, now is the best time to do it. If on the rare chance something did go wrong it wouldn't be as inconvenient as if you had a lot of data to backup.

As for me, I updated to service pack 1 when it came out...the thing is I did a complete reformat at the time since I wanted everything to feel fresh and see what the differences are between a fresh XP and a fresh XP with SP1. I've never had any problems with this OS and likely will not upgrade for quite some time. As many times as MS has screwed up OS's (win9x anyone?) this one is incredibly stable and does everything I want it to. Oh...and even though on the rare chance something does crash(and its' ALWAYS IE) it doesn't kill the system. Of course those IE crashes are rare in XP, and most people will never see them. When IE crashed the 2nd time I switched to Mozilla. I am so happy now. Between Mozilla, Mozilla Mail, and WinXP SP1, my machine is doing everything I want it too and it's quite smooth.

I am happy.

I belive this was also fixed in a hot fix, but there was a major flaw that allowed for a webpage of html email to be programed to del any thing on your computer simply by viewing it.

I'm running three XP Pro SP1 workstations without a single glitch on a variety of hardware. Make sure that you archive old files if/when you upgrade so that you can go back to SP0.

Always get service packs. They fix soo many things it's stupid. Rather than "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", my motto is, "something's always broke, fix it even if you haven't noticed it yet". Not as catchy, but it's much more true.

No problems with SP1 on WinXP Home. I may move to WinXP pro in the very near future. I use XP Pro at work and the difference between the two 'flavors' is enough to make me want to switch.

What security issue? How about "someone" deleting your hard drive. Is that bad enough for you? With XP Pro and no patches or security fixes, you are left WIDE open to this attack. I don't care if you have the latest definitions for your AV software or even if you are behind a PIX firewall. The hole is with XP, so I HIGHLY recommend EVERYONE get SP1, no if, ands, or buts.
