9500 Pro + AGP 8X + Hyperion = NO GO!

Trying to get this setup to work in AGP 8X mode AND Stable:
Gigabyte 7VAXP, ATI 9500 PRO (Catalyst 2.4 Drivers), Hyperion 4.46 Drivers, WINXP Pro, 512 MB Crucial.

- The error I am getting is after a fresh WINXP Pro SP1 install, installing the Hyperion drivers, installing the ATI Catalyst drivers (Driver then control panel) the system is unstable and crashes in both 2D and 3D.

- On MY personal system which is the same I had to settle for using AGP 4X and the Via 4.39 drivers to get a stable system (Been great for SIX months.)

- I am looking for someone who has the same setup running at AGP 8X in a stable condition including all Direct X and OpenGL games and can give me an idea on how to set it up.

8x agp doesn't seem to work real well with ati cards. Seems like when 4x agp boards first came out and some had to run 2x agp to get nvidia cards stable.

So that makes me wonder if it is a chipset problem (KT 400), an ATI 8X AGP implementation problem, or simply drivers...? Or worst case ... a combination of.

Catalyst 2.4 or 3.4?

It's likely a mobo AGP implementation problem.

Edit: check for a BIOS update.

you could always rma the board if they have a newer revision. Otherwise put your agp to 4x. This should stabilize it. You can use smartgart in the ATI control panel with the newest drivers (3.0 & up) to set to 4x.

I have the latest BIOS installed.

Also I have the latest revision 7VAXP. This is happening with two systems. Putting it to AGP 4X does stabilize it. Still running older VIA drivers. Any noticable advantage to the new Hyperion drivers?

its a problem with the agp drivers on the board from what i remember... not the card itself
