Honestly, assuming a 7970 is equivalent to a 6990 in performance, and if these Swedish benchmarks of BF3 are to believed, the Phenom II is going to throttle the 7970 pretty badly.
One thing to remember with the HD6990, is that AMD currently doesn't support DX11 multithreaded rendering...
Perhaps it is implemented for Battlefield 3 only, like Nvidia did for Civ5, but Sweclockers should have used a GTX590 or 580GTX Sli instead, to be sure that missing driver features weren't negatively impacting the performance
So if we extrapolate between the 3.0 and the 3.5, a 4.0 would be roughly 5fps slower than a stock 2500k (Well I assume its stock, they say 3Ghz, did they underclock it or is it a typo?). Although it would be 16fps slower than a 2500k at 4GHz. Although thats for peak FPS, for minimum FPS there isn't much of a difference at all.
This thread does kind of make me rethink what card I am going to go with. I am still thinking 7950, but I may end up going with a 7870 depending on benchmarks.
