The 9600GT has entered the fray @ <$200. It will probaly settle around $149-169. If anybody has lifted their head from their screens the economy is turmoil. The video card mills have to churn out product and the warehouses have to be emptied. Consumer demand has to be jump started by attractive prices. The 8800Gt will follow down too.

Yeah, if the 8800GT drops to around 180 I'd definitely get it.

Because some politician or talking head said so?

I've got $50 of EVGA bucks from a broken deal last year. Which is a better value. 9600 GT Superclocked at 139, the 9600GT KO at 149 or the 9600GT SSC at 169? I can also get the 8800GT for 189 with the discount. I am NOT a huge gamer but would like to get the most bang for the buck. I am striving to build as quiet of a system as possible.

Currently I am running a Q6600 at stock speeds, 7600 GT video card, Corsair 550VX PS, Antec P182 case, Scythe Ninja Cooler, 4 GB of Corsair DDR2 RAM. Will the slower clocked 9600GT run cooler and quieter than the higher clocked 9600 or would it even be noticeable?

TIA

As it turns out, a quick Google search will reveal what a recession is. It takes all of 5 seconds. For those of you Belles Toaster that cant even do that, a recession is TWO CONSECUTIVE QUARTERS OF NEGATIVE GROWTH. This last quarter we had .6% growth, slow, but still not a recession. Im also aware you said "turmoil" but thats nitpicking.
Agreed with vanvock, dont repeat political rhetoric unless you've checked the facts.

Also gpgofast, any of those have relatively noisey coolers since they are single slot solutions. Best case senario is you get the 8800 GT, the stock version, get an aftermarket fan for relatively cheap (google fan reviews tho, they arent all the same for sure) then OC it. That would be fast, silent and extremely high bang-for-buck ratio.

The 9600GT is pretty great but there is no doubt the 8800GT is better and the price difference is not substantial... I mean you can get an MSI 8800GT with a custom dual slot cooler (OC) for just 216 and if you factor the rebate it gets as low as 190 bucks... and if you are willing to spend a little more you can get a Gigabyte Ultra Durable 2 8800GT for 230 which OCs like crazy because of the 4-phase power and the ability to change voltages with the GamerHUD, not to mention the shorter, more reliable board and the custom zalman cooler.

I would say the 8800GT is worth the extra cash but the 9600GT is no slouch in performance either so it's really a win-win situation.

guess what happens when you put the 9600gt's 174 Forceware driver (that was used for all these benches) on a 8800gt?

That's the one I was talking about.

Only a $20 rebate though and I would think with a well-known company like MSI you wouldn't have any trouble getting it.

IMO I couldn't justify buying the 9600GT for $20 less. In some games it is close, but the 8800GT is still faster and sometimes very much so.

Someone please pay attention to what he says!

I found out about that specific video card when I had just bought my eVGA 8800GT 512 MB!

I think that MSI video card is the perfect price/performance ratio item available in the world.

Do yourself a favor, and buy that card, now that I didn't, and after that, if you want to trade it for mine... :'(

The 8800GT then truly shines, especially in DX10 games... however, AA performance is much better on the 9600GT relatively, the 8800GT still wins but by a very close shot... I think this AA bug is the reason the 8800GT 256MB is so dreadful.

There is a pretty hot deal on a 8800GTS 512 for $259 with a $30 rebate (for a grand total of $229AR) and a pretty hot deal on the 8800GT on zipzoomfly ($179AR), I think they are worth the extra cash for the performance.

Even if CoD4 is the most demanding game one will play, it's still worth getting a better card because you'll be guaranteed to want to play a newer game further down the line, who knows, maybe you'll keep your card up until CoD5 and then you'll appreciate spending those extra bucks.

I'm considering getting that same card: MSI Zilent 8800GT OC.

MSI card now cheaper at Chiefvalue...

$183.98 final price including shipping after coupon CPMCFTSVA07 and $30 rebate. $216.99 + $4.99 and any applicable taxes out of pocket up front minus any credit card rebates that you possibly get before paying the bill (to satisifly the strict language requirements found on this and other sites).

$216.99
$4.99 shipping
-$8.00 coupon CPMCFTSVA07
-$30.00 MIR

Total: See above

$178.98 after above and $5.00 PriceGrabber rebate.

The tech report compared 8800s to 9600s.

http://techreport.com/articles.x/14168

What kind of further OC have you been able to achieve with that cooler?

I'll be aiming for 700/2000.

I think I'm at 721/2021 right now. When I get home, I'll double check. I'm using rivatuner with the fan set at 40%

I may be off on these numbers but will clarify when i get home.

$178.98 shipped if you get or have the PriceGrabber $5.00 bonus review rebate.

thats not how a "shipped" figure works. shipped means the total amount coming out of your pocket. That means base + tax + shipping, but not including MIR...

But it's still a very good deal. The 9600 is a nice midrange card, but right now it is overpriced, and the 8800GT is underpriced (probably because it has an 8 instead of a 9 in the name)

It makes me REALLY want to get one....and another....and DAMN...can't Tri-SLI these...

Great going!!

Sorry ole grand poobah of deal lingo. Next time I'll state shipped after all applicable rebates, coupons, shipping and tax. Tax is limited to far fewer people so I didn't list it. Next time I'll place tax if applicable! Regardless of your definition of the language, it was all broken down with the exception of "possible" taxation.

LOL!

Don't get me started. I'm already in a bad mood because the damn card is $13.00 cheaper (after extra $3.00 discount and extra $10 rebate than I bought it for last Wednesday). Where's the damn trout to slap you boys with! :Q
