I think it's supposed to come out this Thursday/Friday.
I snagged one @ BBY on Saturday but haven't had time to open it and fool around with it. Got a new pressure washer that takes priority.

What.............................the.................................????????????

This thing has only 64sp's & 4 ROPs. How is it doing so well? I mean, HOW?

Did Nvidia finally implement double precision? Or Double the operations per clock?

I mean, it is dead even with a 3870, and sometimes manhandles is and is neck and neck with a 8800GT?? Something is amiss here. And if the specs are correct, then I, as well as most others in here, never really understood how ROP's function.

GPU-Z doesn't recognize new chips properly.

9600gt is basically G92 GTS minus 64 SP.

how do you work that out when the 9600GT clearly keeps up with the 8800GT and beats it when using AA and AF.

EDIT: well it beats the 8800GT when 8xMSAA and 16xAF is enabled in HL2 Ep2 at 1920x and is 1fps behind the 8800GT on the other game tested World in Conflict which is pretty amazing.

All this on its first driver aswell.

Wasn't there something about how they optimized and fixed the AA and AF on the 9600gt, which may explain why it's able to keep up or beat the 8800gt on quality settings?

Nope, it's just not a priority.
You can checkout my hairy arm and dirty socks, there might be a 9600GT still sealed in there somewhere

well, next time .. give us a head's up when you are going to upgrade

... so WE can plan

Seriously, it is really good to see nvidia give AMD some competition in the midrange .. it looks like an excellent practical DX10 midrange gaming value.

i wonder what its big bro will be like
:Q

I did, check my post 2-3 weeks ago, told ya all prices were falling cause I finally got my 8800gt

I don't see why people are complaining about new cards? I bought a 8800GTS 512 10 days ago. The day something better comes out (with reasonable bang for the buck, x2, GTX, and ultra don't count) I am gonna buy the better thing, and sell my card on ebay. I got an XFX one so my lifetime warranty is transferable... sure I will not sell it for 100% of its cost... but close enough.

oh god... that.... that is below what I expect from hardOCP...
It doesn't deserve to be called a "review" as it tarnishes the name of websites who write real reviews.

It sounds pretty interesting and it was surprising it to see it keep up with the 8800GT on the AA tests with only 64 shaders, though it is an overclocked card and an overclocked 8800GT would probably steer away for a clear advantage as well, so stock vs stock would be a much fairer battle.

The only game it beat 8800gt is half life 2 by 3 fps. It's based on a 3 year old engine where it isn't so shader intensive compared to current crop of games. A gefoce 7 with weak shader will give you good results with this game.

A stock 8800gt is clocked @ 600mhz and pushes the card to 9600 MPixels/sec.

The OC version of the 9600gt was tested @ 650mhz and pushes the card to 10400 MPixels/sec.

This is the reason why 9600gt OC beats 8800gt in Half life 2 when AA is applied.

You guys are getting crazy over nothing. 9600gt doesn't beat a 8800gt. It is a decent card but as more shader intensive games arise a 8800gt will see a bigger lead in the future.

Price difference is so minimal right now that there's no reason not to get a 8800gt over 9600gt.

Word is that all G92 GPU's (G92-150(8800 GS), G92-270(8800 GT), G92-400 (8800 GTS) so far introduced has this AA-bug (uses too much vram when using AA). This would be fixed in G94-300 (9600 GT). There's good chance this is fixed in also upcoming G92-450 (9800 GX2)..which would be essential since it's basically 512MB card.
----
There is also this device id to be found on new Nvidia drivers:
NVIDIA_G92.DEV_0612.1 = "NVIDIA G92-420"

If Nvidia won't have changed it's code name strategy it would slot between 8800 GTS 512/1024 and 9800 GX2.

It's intresting that 9600 GT and 8800 GT has so similar prices in USA. In Germany 9600 GT is 50 USD cheaper than 8800 GT (at least this is initial price..).

Or what about Palit's overclocked card with non-reference cooler (Zalman) that is around 30 USD cheaper than cheapest 8800 GT 512? So far all of those coolers have been WAY better than reference models..for example reference 8800 GT 512 keeps near 90C when in similar conditions Palit's 8800 GT 1024 keeps around 65C. Being more quiet at same time.

The 9600GT is an exciting product. It is a big depature from the 7600 and 8600 series, which were souped up cards from the 68XX gen. Not only does it show us how good this core can scale, but like the 8600GT, expect huge supply and a price below $90 within a few months.

Not surprised. This industry needed cheap cards that will support DX10 games, albiet at low res. The 9800GT looks like it will well surpass 30% on the 8800 Ultra.

A GX2 version of this, priced at $349 or so, would be really nice. It would be about as fast as an Ultra and really dent into 3870x2 sales.

Yikes.

Sure 8600 were underpowered but they aren't anything like 68xx generation. It's entirely different architecture and added whole new API called DX10.

$90 in few months? I wish.

As far as I know 9800gtx it supposed to be same G92 core with 256 bit memory bus.

Azn:
I think that G92's limit (if we are optimistic) could be single GPU card that performs 30% better than 8800 GTS 512. It would require that they have G92 that has AA-bug fixed, G92 clocked as high as it's possible (over 800MHz, possible but difficult) and that this card would use same sort of mem chips as MSI 9800 GX2: 1200MHZ (2400MHz DDR).

1200MHz DDR is pretty good for GDDR3..it's almost 24% higher than what's found on 8800 GTS 512.
