9600XT/fx5700 - feasable for future games?

Basically was just wondering if anyone thought either cards would be able to play upcoming titles (HL2, Doom 3) in 1024x768 with good or respectable framerates? I'm looking to upgrade my nforce2 on-board graphics (god help me) in a month or so, and was looking for a good card within the $150-$170 range by then. Any suggestions?

Yes, but...
$170? Radeon 9800 for $173 right now at Newegg, and if you wait a month, that will probably drop further. it will beat the pants off both the 9600 XT and 5700. Much better bang/buck, even w/o overclocking (performs on par w/ 9700 Pro).

unless it's a 9800 NP or higher, it's not feasible for future games. needless to say, 9800SE is NOT feasible either.

The 570u is a great card. I own one and it overclocks extremely well, the only issue with the 5700u is its price, it makes no sense right now to buy a 5700u when you can get a Radeon 9800 pro for only $30 more, I with those prices had been around when I got my 5700u If you see a 5700u in the $130-140 price range it would be a good deal, but for $170, which it is currently at, it's not that great a deal (I got mine around Christmas for $180 w/ a game bundle, so I didn't get ripped off THAT badly )

hmm, dont' see i how i missed the 9800/pro deals. The 9800pro should come under $200 (currently 210) after the release of the next gen cards in late may. Hmm, if that happens I think I'll go with the pro. Thanks for the help guys, been out of the loop a long time

Also newegg is out of it right now but a MSI Geforce FX 5900XT with VIVO is awesome. Beats out the ATi sometimes even tho its the value High End. It also OCs to the moon and back.
I just bought one (hasn't come yet but the reviews have gotten pretty much all of them well above 5900Ultra levels even touching a couple 5950 Ultras).

why does my 9500 Pro play the HL2 Beta fine @1024x768 then? fine as in ussually in the 50FPS region outside and highier when inside.

9600XT will do fine in HL2 and probably Doom3, but don't expect to get smooth play with 4xAA/16xAF and all settings on full.

i had a fx 5700 256 MB non-ultra. it could play far cry at 1024 x 768 with medium detail at respectable frame rates i.e 40 fps. so i think it could also run doom3 and HL2 at the same resolution but you're gonna be feeling it 'cause that's about the max that card can handle. i'd try to go for a 9800 pro if i were you.
