No, you can't hack the memory from 256bit to 128bit or vice versa. It has either one or the other. A 9500Pro will never come near a 9700 for this reason. It will always be limited by it's 128bit ram. You can only overclock the 9500pro since it already has all 8 pipes enabled.

Now if you had a 9500 non pro, you might have been able to unlock 4 pipes to make it a pro. It would still have 128bit memory, though.

This is the reason that the 4 pipe 9800SE's with 256bit memory installed were sought after. If you could unlock the other 4 pipes, and do some overclocking, you potentially had a full 9800pro for a lot less money. You at least got a 9800 non pro.

i will go with the 9600xt if you can find a used one for a good price.

as already said, a 9800 Pro is so the way to go. if you can afford the extra ~$75 or so, you won't be unhappy

if i was goign to spend the money on a 9800pro, i'd jump up to a 6600GT instead. something to consider.

for the budget, the GF4Ti and 9600Pro are great deals currently.

i wish ppl would quit ranting about the 9500 pro, yes, it was a great deal.. when it was available. but the 9600pro is no slouch and either is the GF4... both are also cheap and readily available.

Appearantly you can get the 9600xt for $85.20 through ATIs tradeup program.

I maybe wrong - never owned one. Just thought I remember people some how moding their 9500Pros into a 9700 Pro.

I wouldn't waste money on the 9600 Pro or XT or any flavor of the card. It was good back when it came out but it's fairly dated now. Trying to play Doom 3 was a sad experience, and HL2 wasn't much better. Unless you want to play 640x480 you might want to save up $$ and get a 6600GT AGP
