the problem is artifacts, tearing and basically horrible performance
im running the stock drivers it came with, this is actually the first time with an ati card

If you have never used the 9600xt but got it from someone it is possible they overclocked it to near death before giving it to you.

I have a 9600xt in one of my rigs, I have a zalman fan on it though.. It's getting kind of old, and has been overclocked since I got it and it is starting to show some signs of age and abuse.
(artifacts and tearing)
Still gives me a solid 35-80+ fps in cs:s at 1280/960 with high settings and custom skins.. Except for militia, that map kicks me down to low 20's shitsville outside.

It's a great card, but they where released quite a while ago.. It could be nearing the end.

Try the new drivers, I have the latest cat.

You could try downloading ATItool and making sure the fan speed is set to 100% to eliminate heat from the equation.

I have a friend who had a vanilla-9600, and he overclocked it like mad, and it perma-mashed it, causing the artifacts that you described. It seems ATI used low quality on those boards unfortunately.

thanks for the heads up gents

im thinking along the same lines, if i go into display
properties i have to keep at 75% disabiling cursor
if i go up to full my desktop icons get all funky
i have played with the nvidia stuff and the detonator drivers for yrs
but this ATI stuff is real finicky
thanks
much

I don't agree with you on this point at all. ATI cards can work just fine in a wide array of applications. I seriously doubt that your problem would occur if you had 'good' video card. I don't know if you bought it used, or got it new (still could be defective), but I know that many people have used 9600's with ZERO problems. The first thing I would do is swap out your 9600 for another ATI card and that would rule out a hardware or software problem.

you made sure to clean up the drivers before installing it right? video drivers do not play well together.

yup

cleaned them all b4 switching cards, so far if i put it
on 16 bit all my tears and artifacts all but vanish
and i can jack it up to full accelleration which leads me to
believe this puppy is kinda cooked, just running simple stuff
like CALL OF DUTY the 9600 chokes, probably somebodys RMA

anyways whats a good card for a lil gamer machine?

like i said its a 2.8@3.0 with a gig of good corsair 3200

depends on how much you want to spend.. The ati 1600pro's have 12 pixel pipelines for under a hundred bucks and 256 mb. . a little more and you can get a 1600 pro with 512mb and a little after that a 1650xt with 24 pixel pipes.

ATI really has the lower end market nailed, you could look at nvidia but you will find they do not have much to compete with the 1600's.

For comparison..

1600pro256mb agp

Core clock: 575MHz

Memory Clock: 1200MHz

PixelPipelines: 12

Radeon 9600XT 256MB

core clock: 500

memory clock: 600

PixelPipelines: 4

If you can swing the price $169
This is the best bang for the buck card on agp.

If you want your agp rig to live for as long as possible without upgrading you'll want to go with this.

You should RMA that 9600xt though, it's still a good card that would be a good backup or to put in a rig for a family member.
