I was originally planning on getting the Radeon 9600XT when it comes out - my price 164+tax - which i realize may be in the midst of an upgrade as we speak, but now I am seeing BFG Asylum FX5900's - at under 200 AR my price - brand new lifetime warranty, etc. I think this would be a really good deal as these babies can overclock pretty well I have heard. How much of an upgrade would they have to do to the 9600XT to make that a better deal than this BFG, and how likely do you suppose that is?
EDIT: also free HL2 with the 9600xt

I think the 5900nu is a faster card in some cases, but keep in mind that they 9600XT is a fully DX9 complaint card, and performs faster than a lot of nvidia's top hardware when shaders are used.

well with the great prices you seem to be able to get i say you should look into a 9800 +free hl2 for a better deal than the 5900nu. i take it that 5900 is the one 128mb eh?

It's a tough call to make. The 5900 should be faster in DX8-and-lower games, should do well in Doom 3, and may have better-looking AF. The 9600XT may in fact be faster in DX9-level games that make heavy use of shaders, may in fact do better than the 5900 in Half-Life 2 (and includes the game, thus making the price of the card somewhat less than what you pay), and has better-looking AA. Fundamentally, the 5900 is a high-end card, and the 9600XT, mid-range. But the real question is what games you (will) play, and which card will serve you better in them. I think it's a tough call between a $230 5900 and a $180 9600XT. Unfortunately, I can't personally tell you how the 5900's AA stacks up compared to the 9600, as that would be a large deciding factor for me. There's no point in buying a 5900 if you won't use AA+AF or if the AA isn't nice, IMO. But I suppose the resolution you'll be playing at is also a consideration. Don't expect decent framerates w/4xAA 8xAF out of the 9600XT much beyond 10x7; the 5900 should be able to provide equally-smooth framerates at 12x10, and possibly higher, because of its much greater memory bandwidth.

There are plenty of reviews for you to compare benchmarks between the two cards in games and resolutions that matter most to you. I suggest doing that first. You can start with AnandTech's recent roundups to find 5900 vs. 9600XT numbers. Firingsquad should also have some numbers, as will GamePC.

Edit: In terms of speed, the 5900 wins, and the 9600XT won't be able to compete as a high-end card. My main concern, HL2, is really a fine point: I'd like fast DX9 performance, but the 5900 should at least offer good DX8 performance. As the 5900 should be faster all-around, it may be a better buy right now. But if you factor in the cost of HL2 (say $40, to account for the $10 charge to mail you the game CDs), the 9600XT will cost almost half of what the 5900 will, so the two cards aren't really in the same league. (As I will definitely buy HL2, I factor it in the purchase price.) The 5900 is really meant to compete with the 9800P, though the Pro is currently priced higher (even factoring in HL2), probably due to supply and demand.

Really, your main consideration should be which card will provide you with acceptable speed at the settings you want, with IQ being a major, but lesser, factor. I think a 9600XT is a great deal at $164, but if it's not fast enough in the way you'll use it, then there's no point in buying something you'll be unsatisfied with from the beginning.

i don't think anand has ever shown 128mb 5900 scores has he? the 5900s suffer at high res with aa and af without 256mb, so that negates much of the advantage of them compared to a 9600xt.

There isnt 1 benchmark or game or review that shows the 9600TX being faster then it !!! ..

The 5900nu .. is faster then the 9600TX in every game on the face of this planet except for the Stupid unfinished pre Half-Life2 Benchmarks at ATI Shader day these cards performed the same 40FPS but that was with old drivers!!!

With new 52.XX drivers ... DX9 games are running allot better now Anandtech has proved that ... The card is still behind the 9800 but are running allot better then the 9600TX

For value for money the FX5900 is a better buy but if you wanna save $34 .. then get the 9600TX

The FX5900nu and Ultra are the same in every way apart from 50Mhz Extra on the Ultra core and an extra 128MB of ram! ... in bench marks they score 1 - 3 FPS apart !

Just came back from the store and saw the 5900NU selling for $199 after a $50 mail-in rebate. I had the 5900NU and bought it for $279 no rebate just 2 weeks ago. I just returned a AIW 9800 Pro, after having just returned the 5900 NU 2 days earlier. I didn't think the AIW 9800 Pro was worth the dough but having been using a 5900NU and 9800 Pro AIW in the past 2 weeks, I definitley like the Radeon picture better. It's a personal preference but the picture looks better IMHO.

I don't even think this is a real question.
HL2- weren't the 5900 and 9600 so close you wouldn't really be able to tell the difference between their performance?

Every other DX8.1/OGl game: 5900 stomps feeble 9600s flat.

The 9600pro and the 5900Ultra were rougly equal in HL2 performance using the DX8/mixed mode but using the DX9 path the 9600 was easily the better performer.

Except for Max Payne 2

Yes, I agree. I'd get the 5900 - it plays today's games much faster, and by the time "tomorrow's" games come out I will want something faster than either a Radeon 9800 or FX5900 anyway.

5900 NU without a doubt. HL2 should be no consideration for this purchase as the game wont be out anytime soon.
The 5900 NU is faster in everything against the 9600 XT except the rare ATI funded shadey day benchmarks on old driver, old engine builds, and old ideas.

And depending on the brand you should be able to get Ultra speeds using coolbits.

See my sig.

Definitely the 5900. Altough Half Life 2 and Duke Nukem Forever benchmarks show the superiority of the VooDoo 2 SLI...
