97 Nissan Sentra Question

Good morning all!
I just bought a used 97 Nissan Sentra GXE with 78000 miles on it. Yeah it's nothing to call home about but it gets me from A to B. Anyways, I have a couple of questions about it for anyone who's familiar or has owned one of these before. While driving it at night, I noticed that the shift indicator (the P, N, R, D, etc..) does not light up when I turn the headlights on. Is this by design or is there a blown bulb in there I need to replace? Next question is, what kinda grade of gas (octane rating) should I be using for it? Just thought I'd get some quick answers from you guys. Thanks!

there might be a bulb, if so, it's blown.

check nissanforums.com for TONS of good info. I think nissanperformancemag.com has a 200sx with mods done to it, (same can be done to yours)


use 87 octance unless you've advanced your timing. (you just bought it, you haven't, so use 87) premium is a waste in stock form, and may even may your car smell like rotten eggs.

I have a 99 Nissan Sentra SE, and it does the same thing sometimes. Its sporadic.
