9700pro - is it dead?

Hi.

Yesterday i was playing warhammer 40k, and all of a sudden artifacts appeared on the screen ... mostly pink pixellated colums an inch apart.

I quit to desktop and stutdown instantly for fear of overheating (although case has 5 fans, two of which are on the side blowing directly onto it). Later, i turned on the computer again and artifacts are still appearing on the windows desktop. After a restart, the artifacts appeared on the windows logon screen too.

I know that this has been propably been covered a thousand times already, but I need a confirmation that the card is dead before buying another one, as i don't have one i can try on. Also, monitor is fine, as it works perfectly when connected to a laptop.

The exact same thing happened to my 9700 Pro a while back and I ended up replacing it with a X800 Pro.

dxdiag is showing DirectDraw, Direct3D and AGP texture accelaration as disabled, even though the direct draw test is ok. Tried latest omega and catalyst drivers in vain.

Also tried lowering core/mem speed to 250/250 but nothing changed. (although i never overclocked it)

Guess i should learn not to buy stuff right off the production line. At least it was fun the 3 yrs it lasted

I feel for you

I'm at a loss for what card to buy now. I dont want something with less power, but dont want to invest a lot in a dead technology (AGP). I'm guessing a GeForce 6800XT AGP is about the same performance, and i found one for ~$150.

Also, i'm being a little hesitant going back to nvidia, since ATI drivers have been spot on for as long as the catalysts were launched, and i've been hearing some complaints about nVidia drivers.

Can anyone confirm this?

Did you check to see if the fan is working? I just came back from a vacation to find my computer crashing and quickly found that the fan on, you guessed it, the 9700 Pro is dead. See my soon-to-be-posted thread about trying to find a new fan.

First thing i checked was the fan, in fact - and it's working fine. Also, artifacts appear as soon as windows bootscreen so i dont think it's a heat issue, but thanks anyway ^-^.

Guess the 9700pros are having a dying fit right now - i searched in google and they were dying everywhere. Guess it wont be so hard to find a used fan after all

yep I am unsure what agp card to buy myself

I visited malta once for 3 days

try going into device manager expanding display adapters and uninstalling wtv is in there, rebooting, let windows install the drivers that were there before, reboot and see if it helps helped me recently
