980 Ti upgrade path

Well - I'm back for the heat of the moment.

I'm looking at getting a new graphics card and monitor. I play a lot of FPS as of late. (Pubg, squad, tarkov, etc.) I've been using my LG B7 for probably over a year straight as my only display for my computer (I know - burn-in bad). I'm burned out on 60hz and non-VRR. I've also had a 980 Ti for quite a while now. I'm burned out on an 980 Ti not even supporting 4k@60hz HDR.

I'm looking at getting the Asus PG279Q[Z] as the monitor. Main concern is having really good VRR, great image quality (not really an IPS fan because of IPS glow but what can you do), good image performance while doing VRR (I've heard of weird ghosting/overshoot issues with freesync VRR displays?), and >100hz image at >1080p resolution. 4k is probably overkill; I have a 4k display already. I play most games at 1080p on it anyway because the 980 ti can't keep >60fps for many titles beyond 1080p.

Graphics card wise I'm torn a bit. Seems like 1080 ti would be good if <$450. (harder to find with non-blower design for that price) 2070 Super is generally good for $500 but low stock everywhere. And 2080 Super seems to not really be worth the extra $200. I've considered biting the bullet for a long time and just getting the 2080 ti but they're hard to find for even $1000 these days and used prices aren't any lower than $900 (with most at $1000+). Double the price for not even 40% gain. Eh.

What's this based on? Seems like speculation.

Yeah, I have a 4K60 display, was thinking of getting a 2070 Super myself. I agree with Happy.

Bought the Zotac 2070 Super. Did it on their website tho because it showed "in stock" there. $548 poof. Damn taxes.

Couldn't justify the $1100 for the 2080 Ti. It's literally double the price. Maybe another time. I'll buy the PG279Q soon.

Buying the Asus PG279Q as well. The LG that has been going around is nice and all but it doesn't have g-sync. So, it won't go as low with VRR and it seems that overshoot is abundant with freesync implementations.

Even buying an NVidia-chipset video card, I don't know that I would go with a G-Sync display, honestly. I would stick to FreeSync(2) displays. Why? Because, generally, monitors last longer than video cards, or at least, video cards go obsolete sooner, and you never know, maybe AMD will pull a rabbit out of their hat with 7nm+ "Big Navi". You would want to be ready for that.

I like Navi too, I just don't see that as a viable option for me right now, due to OpenCL compatibility issues. If they can resolve them, and get supported by major mining software, my opinion might change.

But honestly, the 2070 Super is a GREAT card, as I understand it, and that's still my current preference for my next card, when I can scrape up the money.

Edit: I don't know if someone saw my comment, and decided that they didn't want me to have one, or perhaps possibly, other people have had this same thinking about the 2070 Super, but when I went to Newegg to check them out, they were literally ALL sold out. Every. Single. One. ... Crazy.

I get that but I'm really particular about displays. It's why I've been using an OLED TV this entire time instead of my IPS displays that were sitting under my bed. (One of them still is - I got rid of the other. (Dell U2410))

The ability to get pitch dark black levels, no trailing blur, and some other niceties along with the really good colors is just "whoa".

I'm also not betting on team red actually ever beating team green on the top end (where I usually buy).

Who says you have to compromise any of those features? There are some really nice Freesync monitors out there that are comparable to their G-Sync counterparts. Personally I like to keep my options open with video cards. With Nvidia now supporting VRR with many Freesync monitors, buying a Freesync monitor is my preferred choice so I don't get locked in to one GPU manufacturer.

980Ti was a fantastic GPU and in many ways it still is, it can drive many new titles @high settings comfortably @1440p, but most likely due to its framebuffer size it is beginning to become long in the tooth.

I personally would skip the RTX 2000-series of cards, from personal experience its not worth it at this moment to invest in ray tracing right now. I would wait it out to see what happens next, AMD may have a killer card on their hands that obliterates (for the price) the current nVIdia high end stack in traditional rasterization workloads and it may even be "affordable" if the RX 5700 series is anything to go by.

Of course if you just can't wait, then anything from the current $400+ range like an RX 5700 XT (AIB preferably) or a reasonably priced RTX 2070 Super would fit the bill and you would see around a 50+ percent increase in performance.

If you game at 1440, I'd not get anything less than a 5700XT. The 5700XT is better, relatively, at 1440 than at 4k.

Upon release, the 2070S was only 2% faster than the 5700XT at 1440 for 25% more money. Not worth it. Hardware Unboxed released a video yesterday testing 37 games with Nvidia's new drivers. It noticeably improved performance in several games and is now 6% faster at 1440 (and 9% faster at 4k). Nvidia also greatly improved their image sharpening and rendered their own DLSS obsolete. Whether that's enough of an improvement to warrant a 25% price increase is up to you to decide (I don't think so) but it's a better value than it was a month ago.

Wish someone had mentioned this sooner as it would've complicated my decision even more. All well - I bought the 2070 Super. I'll take g-sync and the generally better (in my past experience) drivers. I've had a lot of issues with team red in the past.

I've had a 9800 Pro, 6600GT, 8800GTS, 2x4850, 6870, 7970, 980 Ti, and some more I'm forgetting... 2070 Super will be fine for now. I can't forget how painful the 4850 was on release.

That looks like a pretty nice monitor, I have the MG278Q myself. I wonder if you went with an AMD card in the future, would Freesync work on that one possibly? I know that Gsync now works on Freesync monitors...
