I personally like the fansink on the GTX+. Very effective for a "stock" cooler. BITD I almost-but-not-quite bought myself a Radeon 3750. What stopped me was that the cheaper cards used single slot cooling (and often slower RAM as well).

I'd take 9800gtx if they cost the same as 4850 (better cooler + physix ;D) ... but as of now, 4850 is much better deal IMO.

Actually the GTX+ is faster than the 4850 (not by a lot, but still...)

the biggest temptation about the 9800GTX+ has to be the tantalizing promise of a cheap step up to GTX260+

O oh. I'm sure there will be some 4850 fanboys who will refute this. LOL.

Seriously, people should just STOP with all the pissing contests between the 4850 and 9800+ when it comes to benchmarks. There will be games where one card is slightly faster than the other, but they are IN THE SAME LEAGUE!!!

If I were going to get the 9800+ over the 4850, it would be because of these reason (in order of decreasing important

1. the 9800+ runs cooler, quiter... out the box. (and warranty intact)
2. Physx
3. SLI (could be a cheap option to get another 9800+ next year to SLI), and SLI scales better than CF.
4. Step up program (for some)

But I would wait for the traditional $30 rebate, which could be happening in about 2-3 weeks with the ways prices are dropping! Hell, the 4850 dropped its price the second it hit online retailers!! So wait for the inevitable rebate!!

IMO, the biggest drawbacks for the 4850 (compared to 9800+) is you may have to:
1. tweak with the fan via XML, and/or flash BIOS
2. buy an aftermarket heatsink (many do already)
3. and may void the warranty.
(AMD dropped the ball on the heatsink here)

Framerates between these two cards, as of right now, should NOT be a deciding issue for buyers, unless of course you're thinking about either SLI or CF down the road. But look, my card can piss out 2 more FPS than yours... well whoopittydoo, Gumby!

Nvidia's vendors are much better than AMD's. I don't think there is even one that compares to Sapphire and their crappy warranty. I have had to use XFX's warranty service and it is excellent, and fast. Performance is one thing, but warranty and service are an added value to me as a consumer. I guess I understand that others have a different POV. But hey, when the $$ comes from my wallet...

stepped up to the GTX 260 instead of this. (it would be a step sideways for me considering im coming from a 9800GTX)

I will probably get one when the prices go a bit lower.. maybe in a month. The card seems to run about the same as the 4850, maybe a little bit less powerful.. maybe a bit more in some games. Whatever the case, I want that dual slot cooling solution. The 4850 runs too hot to not have a dual slot solution, unless you have some great case with excellent cooling. My case is good enough (Coolermaster Centurion 5), but not enough to handle the heat from that 4850. As soon as Visiontek offers a 4850 with dual slot cooling for a reasonable price, I would consider it.

W/E. I'd see how well the 4850 overclocks with a different cooler and an updated version of RivaTuner before I'd make any absolute statements like that.

....

A 4850 with aftermarket cooler and 9800GTX+ with stock cooler should be in the same price range... and I would like to see a no-hold-bar comparison between these two configurations. No-hold-bar! Overclock to them both to the max, and see which is better. In addition, I would also like to see a Crossfire versus SLI deathmatch between these two configurations. ....

overclock both to the max (wihtout any extra coolers ???)
i agree, and I say this calls for an article by anandtech!

Decisions, Decisions...

All of my parts are here now waiting to be assembled except for the GPU. I have been waiting for the 9800GTX+ release. I really want to get this thing built and setup before grad school starts again. After that, I will have a lot less time. I know we will probably see a small rebate applied to these cards in a month or so but I'm tempted to go ahead and pull the trigger now. It wont get a whole lot cheaper than $199.

- I do like the fact that most high end Nvidia partners offer lifetime warranty.
- A possible step up to the GTX260+ (GT200b) w/ EVGA also makes it appealing. However, what will the GTX260+ MSRP be? As I understand it, you pay the difference between the two MSRP's. So in this instance, $300-$200 for a $100 GTX260+ upgrade before late Oct. if I so choose. Hell, an OC'd 9800gtx+ is going to perform pretty damn close to a 260+ anyway. I'm not sure its worth $100 for those extra FPS.
- I also like the fact that the 9800gtx+ do have a better cooler. The 4850's do run hot and dump it into the case - i cant imagine a CF setup with two smoldering 4850's. However, a new intel chipset with SLI support and a cheap extra 9800gtx+ in a year or so does seem like a smart upgrade possibility that will run cooler than 4850 CF.
- In a single card match up, on avg., the 4850 does seem to have a very slight advantage. This could diminish a bit with the evolution of Nvidia drivers as well. And personally, a cooler card/case with solid warranty is more important than 4-5 fps.
- Plus, the 9800gtx+ should OC very well with even stock cooling. That may be a concern with the 4850.
- When it comes to SLI I think it will end up performing better than dual 4850's as well.

Either way, you know you're going to make a purchase and have buyers remorse in a month or two because prices inevitably fall and new, enhanced versions of the base model will be trickling out. I just don't have time to wait so I think I'm about to order this soon unless I can be convinced otherwise by information I may have missed.

I agree, Anandtech should do a lengthy Mid-range head to head battle review or something.
Stock 9800gtx+ v 4850
OC'd 9800gtx+ v 4850 (although no Ati models have decent cooling as of yet)
SLI 9800gtx+ v CF 4850

It would help my decision a lot to see some of that...

Update: I was wondering, does EVGA even consider the GTX+ a NEW base model? I know you cant step up from say a 8800GT to a 8800GT SUPERCLOCKED "SC" model as they are considered the same base model. Does EVGA acknowledge the GTX+ as a whole new line - the successor to GTX or simply an enhanced version of that previous base? They should... If so, then you technically still couldn't go from a 9800gtx+ to a 260+ and jump over the 260 regular could you? Or, since the 9800gtx+ did come out AFTER the 260 in time, do they acknowledge that and let you jump to the next best release within 90 days of your purchase even though there is an upgrade model in between?

Idk, I think a GTX 260 now and a near-free step-up to a GTX 260+ would be a better alternative.

Yeah, especially since you probably hit GTX+ speeds with your GTX anyways.

Then you might want to go to the 280+

Yeah, especially since you probably hit GTX+ speeds with your GTX anyways.
But not GTX++ speeds

At this time, no. However, I'm just a lowly peon and have no say in these matters, nor am I told of future/unannounced plans beyond the next couple video card releases.

This is exactly what i'm going to do as well (have a 9800GTX right now). The step up is going to cost me about 40 $ so it's definitively worth it
