I'm REALLY glad I upgraded to the 9800NP when I did now. Too bad my friend (who is trying desparately to get UT2k3 working on his outdated system right now) didn't pick one up when I told him about it over a month ago.

I had to upgrade though. I'm the guy who tore a memory chip off a TI500 trying to pry off a ramsink.

Feeling really good right now...

So maybe they're recalling all the 9800's stores have in stock to flash them with the 9800 Pro BIOS themselves, then sell them as 9800 Pro's and let their 9800SE take over as the "value" card for the 9800 series.

If 9800pro cards with 3.3ns memory (maybe hidden by heatsinks) show up in the market then this rumor will be true!

I wish I had the resources that AnandTech does so I could benchmark a bunch of cards to see how they compare. Like the 9800 non-pro and FX5900 128 MB cards on the same charts as the Pro and Ultra versions. That would be very helpful to see if it's worth paying twice the money for a FX5900 Ultra instead of a FX5900.

Maybe this will fit the bill? The benchmarks for this card have those comparisons and the 9600pro and 9800SE

Ok I re-read the thread and agree that you were not talking about DX-9 games, however I think it is a waste to buy a card that cannot play current games with decent frame rates when there are cards on the market that will, (not-withstanding the blatent cheating and covering up, that has been done by Nvidia)

Actually I would like to comment on the ATI cheating, For anybody who is reading this now and was not into gaming and benchamarking a couple of years ago. When ATI was caught cheating in there drivers they made the statement that it was only in the "leaked" beta drivers, and they would remove it and not cheat anymore. Now as to the first part of the statement I just do not believe them, why work on a driver cheat to never release it? as the the second part there was a software specific "optimization" in the cat 3.5 drivers for 3dmark03, however I am not sure that it was cheating short of the fact it used the program name to start the optimization.

If you are not buying a video card for DX9 than save your money and get a ti4200 it will be very good for your older games.

i think your memory is off Eagle17. the quack issue appeared in official drivers and was never called a cheat by ati let alone something they said they would not do again. actually the optimization was a bit of code that worked without degradation in image quality on the original radeon cards and was only removed because of degraded image quality with the r8500. as for 3dmark03 and the cat3.5s, the optimization was not triggered by application name detection but actual shader code detection.

I have a Ti4200 running at 325/650 if you didn't see the benchmark scores in my profile... and it doesn't run BF1942 in 1024x768 at full detail with 4X AA and 8X AF... hell... 2X AA slows it down to the point that it becomes difficult to play. This is why I'm upgrading... not JUST for BF1942... but mainly for the ability to run full detail and 4XAA and 8XAF

I received word back from newegg saying that the 9800np was discontinued do to a performance problem (I think it ran to fast ). I guess with the release and availability of the SE's no one wants to spend the money to make the 9800 and clock them down. makes business sense especially since ati is on top of the market right now (as far as speed not market share).
