9800 Pro makes *VERY* loud noises!

I just installed my shiny new Radeon 9800 Pro (OEM), replacing my trusty old GeForce4 Ti4800 (and yes, I removed the drives and ran driver cleaner software to get rid of all traces). I am using the Catalyst 3.8 drivers, don't have the card overclocked, and have a relatively well ventilated case (Lian Li PC70).

The troubles only happen when the room it's hot out. If it's hot (>85) I'll get a *VERY* loud, high pitched squeal which appears to be coming from an alarm onboard the 9800 (about 75db). It continues as long as I'm running whatever 3D app I've been using (Tron 2.0 for example). Above 90 degrees, it starts to make noise when I even open up a blank IE6 instance! Just as soon as I close the offending app, the noise stops instantly.

Originally, I got the card and hooked up my Swiftech MCW50 graphic/chipset waterblock (attached to a Koolance Exos). Due to the horrid noise, I RMA'd the card and got a replacement. This time I've tried it without the water cooling and the same problem is still happening. So it's not something I did to damage the original card certainly.

The only thing which is a bit of a concern is the fact that the original card appeared slightly warped (waterblock installation problem perhaps?) and the heatsink on the new card rattles ever so slightly. I guess I'll try my waterblock on the new card and cross my fingers.

Anyhoo, I've heard a few people suggest that it's possibly a voltage issue, but I'm very doubtful. Not only do I have a top of the line Enermax 650w PSU (36a on all three rails), but during my very unscientific testing using CPUCool (HLT cooling plus voltage/temp monitoring), none of the rails fluctuates during heavy use, and all are within 1% of spec.

Has anyone seen/heard this kind of problem?

Is the waterblock making contact with the core? If there's a shim on the VPU, that might be causing problems.

Hmm... there is a shim preinstalled, but I don't know if it's realistically removable. Then again, since I'm not even using the waterblock this time around, that's probably not the issue.

Try moving it into a different room, or pointing a room fan on it?
