Finally, and after how many calls and confirmations by their CSRs that it is 256-bit? They're probably going to get A LOT of RMAs for this.

So who's going to try to get newegg to give them a 256-bit version by claiming false advertising?

Sadly, Newegg would probably play a card from the terms on their website (

This says they have the right to cancel orders, etc. In this case the orders were not cancelled and we are getting something we didn't order! Man I'm pissed.

I wouldn't get all worked up over false advertising. I'm sure there was like 1-2 people over there who actually knew anything, and they also probably don't work on the product descriptions. Probably just a cut and paste job by someone lower down the chain. It probably got the attention of those 1-2 people though when their phone people started asking and the order numbers on the part climbed. I think it's enough that they're paying return shipping. It's not like they charged you for an actual 256-bit 9800 Pro and shipped you this. The price was consistent with what the 128-bit part was going for. Of course, it would've been easier for all parties if they had agreed to just cancel the orders that didn't go out yet. Anyway, that said, it kind of sucks that they're not just lowering the price of the REAL 9800 Pro and instead producing these lower end parts.

Basically it's a 9500 pro with higher speeds. That explains why the picture looks like a 9500 pro. It's really just an overclocked 9500 Pro, assuming they're even using real 9800 pro speeds.

Here's the numbers from tomshardware for a 9500 pro and a real 9800 pro:

ATI Radeon 9500 PRO ATI Radeon 9800 PRO
Chip Technology 256-bit 256-bit
Process 0.15 Micron 0.15 Micron
Transistors ~107 Mio ~107 Million (?)
Memory Bus 128-bit DDR 256-bit DDR/DDR2
Memory Bandwidth 8.8 GB/s 21.8 GB/s
Pixel Fillrate 2.2 Gigapixel/s 3.04 Gigapixel/s
Anti Aliased Fillrate 13.2 Billion AA Samples/s 18.2 Billion AA Samples/s
AGP Bus 1x/2x/4x/8x 1x/2x/4x/8x
Memory 128MB 128/256MB
GPU Clock 275 MHz 380 MHz
Memory Clock 275 MHz (550 DDR) 340 MHz (680 DDR)
Memory BGA 3.6 ns ?
Vertex Shader 4 4
Pixel Pipelines 8 8
Texture Units Per Pipe 1 1
Textures/TextureUnit 16 8
Vertex S. Version 2 2
Pixel S. Version 2 2
DirectX Generation 9 9

Actually... the 9500 pro is listed with more textures per texture unit ... so I'd expect multitexturing at least with this to be right on pace with the original.

The 9600 XT and below are listed as 1024-xxxx and so on.....this card is a 1024 card....

So im suggesting itz a 9600 XT....but not sure...hopefully it ISNT true, and even if it was newegg may still honor that price

However, a few others stores have card at such low price so it is probably true, newegg mighta just got picture wrong..

I think Newegg changed it.. It says Sapphire Radeon 9800PRO Video Card, 128MB DDR 128bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model 1024-1C47, OEM...

They are selling a 128bit 9800pro for a cheaper price. The 9800pro is suppose to be 256bit. They are doing this to get rid of all the old chips they got laying around. If you buy this card you are getting ripped off and wastin your money.. My 9700pro is more powerfull than this card.

By at your own risk

I'm just happy the cards price went down and yes I read the thread. What it does mean is that Nvidia will have to make some decisions on its prices also.

You really dont read the thread.. If you did then you would relize that this is a crippled 9800pro with 128bit. So you would be getting a slower card for a little less. You would be wasting money because the 9800pro 256bit is only $200

To show all the confusion. If newegg is going to pay the return shipping, then that is not so bad... I figured I'd be down the shipping costs.

Hmm thats interesting about the performance. I'm sure it's a great card, I loved my 9500 pro when I had one. But there are better cards to be had now, and for less money even. It looked like a good deal at first but I'll keep shopping (or wait til the REAL 9800Pros come down to $175 )

Good question. All I can say is be very careful what you buy if the price seems a little too good at the moment.

Exactly...I assume many who ordered thought they were ripping Newegg off on a price mistake so I have little pity.

What? Fry's had a normal 256-bit pro on sale a while ago for 179. The X800's are out. Other sites have been selling 9800 pros for 199 or so for a while now. It was natural to assume that this was a price cut since the newer cards were coming out.

A rip-off would be 100 bucks or so, but 28 dollars lower than it has been for quite some time is not a rip off, especially since other places (frys) have sold these cards for around this price.

Edit: Not to mention the people that called to confirm that were told it was a 256-bit card.

I feel ripped off! Now I got to get this thing returned to newegg (call, get an RMA number, etc) and make sure my CC is refunded etc. Sure, I'll get my money back, but I won't be paid for my aggravation for their mistake.

whoah, that's quite the leap in logic mate, how can u say u have no pity for ppl who themselves are getting ripped off? I would lay the blame much more on eihter the incompetence and ignorance of said stores employee's to relay the said information or on sapphire for still using the 9800 PRO name.
