Is it worth it to go from a 8800GT SC to a 9800GTX+? I am game at 1680x1050, and like AA and AF. I usually play BF2, Stalker and Obilivion

@keysplayr2003

I'm interested in your demo for Heatray Physx. Like to see what your doing different to get just 27-30fps avg. I put god mode on stayed outdoors and just focused on physx items not bots. I even used just the Gravity wave-cannon though 98% of test, because it moves the hail acround. Nothing you can even remotely consider normal gameplay, yet still after 2 different runs I average 40.2 - 40.3fps. That's with 31bots running around.

@zod96 No it's not worth the difference. You really should look at 4870, 4870x2, GTX260, or GTX280.

as SSChevy said it is not worth the difference... but I would like to add that the cards he suggest are indeed sufficiently faster to be noticeable, they are also expensive... and are not THAT much faster as to justify the upgrade cost in my opinion, especially on your resolution. In other words, I would recommend that you keep your GT for now, and upgrade to a nehalem + next gen sometime next year.

What I'd love to know is if it will possible to run two nvidia cards on an intel chipset, one for graphics, say a GTX 260 and a cheaper 8500 or 8400 card for physics alone. I know they haven't brought physx to any 8000 series cards yet, but considering how cheap some lower end 8000 cards are I'm kind of hoping that will work.

no it isn't... although nvidia just announced that nehalem X58 chipsets could come with their nforce 200 SLI bridge for SLI or CF on the same board (the CF bridge is built into the intel chipset since AMD licensed them that years ago)...

Run it at 1920x1200 if you can. Not sure if your 37" does that res. I guess I could try 1920x1080 on my 24" and see what differences there are.

No it doesn't do that resolution 1080P max. I'll try to force it to see what happens.

Edit

Doesn't work. Don't waste time testing in 1080p.

Heh, np. I did try to just play the HeatRay Level, and for some reason, I was getting much higher fps throughout.
Framerates would go up to just below 70, but often remained at mid to high 40's. Weird. Maybe there is something askew with
UT3's demo playback. What promted me to do this, was that I reduced my res to 1920x1080 and saw the EXACT same framerates as 1920x1200 playing the demo. This shouldn't have been, the fps should have went up even just a little, but didn't.

Isn't the 9800GTX+ coming out today? I checked a few places no one has any...

I wouldn't bother stalking the 9800GTX+. If you weren't impressed with the difference a 4850 gave you, you'd most likely be disappointed with anything less than a 4870 or GTX 260. They're falling in the $260-280 range after rebates and would be well worth it over a 9800GTX+ at $229 imo.

I can comment on the following so far. The level of interactive physics is pretty high. When i read about destructible environments
in reviews, I thought it would be just certain objects that can be destroyed, hurled, exploded etc. The level of interaction is much higher than I thought I would be seeing.

Examples:

Building walls, columns, ceilings are incrementally destroyable. Rail Car boxes hanging from a crane cable can be shot apart to let the boxes fall, and if you wait for a tornado, and if you time it right, you can shoot the cable and the wind will actually catch the box and let it rise into the tornado and then spew it out. The physics look pretty natural. The way it might look as if it were really happening.

Roofs being torn off by twisters. You can see the corrugated metal roofs being torn, bent, mangled under the pressure of the twisters. Debris from broken buildings, concrete block, metal beams, are picked up and hurled by twisters and blown around from intense wind.

Shoot the floor out from under an enemy and watch them fall and crash down.

About performance. I can take some screenshots and maybe even some FRAPS movies to show the level of action going on to give
this some scale. But for now, I'll just give some rudimentary numbers.

Single 9800GTX+, q6600, 790i, 177.39's, UT3 Physx Mod package.

1920x1200 0xAA. Tornado Physx Demo.

Hardware Physics "Enabled" - Avg. 27 fps (GPU driven)
Hardware Physics "Disabled" - Avg. 6.8 fps (CPU driven)

The Tornado map would of course be faster without the Physx package. But you will also have no Physx immersion.
More to come. SLI'd 9800GTX's. GTX280.

wow! I pretty much gave up on Nvidia after gtx280 came out... but this physx thing sounds really good... might actually make 9800gtx+ competitve after all...

is the 9800 GTX+ SC overall a better /faster card than a 4850. I can buy a used 4850 for $150ca, I bought a new 9800 GTX+ SC evga yesterday for 4200 tax in, is it worth saving $50 I am playing at 1920x1200 relatively new games , don't have crysis and will not be bothering with it either

The Hd4850 and 9800GTX+ are about even as per this June article:

AT Article

Except for Oblivion (9800GTX+ has a far lead) or BioShock (4850 has a far lead), they are both about the same trading little fps blows back and forth.
