the new king is here. Everyone was worried that, being G92 based, the new 9800GTX will still underperform. But it seems there is finally a single card that can beat the 8800 ultra.
And now with tri sli and lower power and heat then the 8800 ultra.

Oh geeze, not you again. I knew you had to repost my link... Anyways it is far from a whooping.

That is horrible performance for a 'next' gen card. Oh well, at least the price of these things are dropping lower and lower... GT200 is what I am waiting for, or R700.

Terrible review, they don't even list any settings they used other than the resolution.

They actually do show the settings they benched at if you go to the individual benchmark pages. So far, all the ones I've looked at have been 0xAA/0xAF...

This thing doesn't look like it does much more than an 8800GTS, which doesn't do much more than an 8800GT. What the 9-series really needs to bring is a $200ish G92 card that supports 3-way SLI. Makes sense to me that if they want you to buy three, they might as well make it a somewhat decent value. As far as I know though, the 9800GTX is the only 9-series that supports 3-way.

If these results are accurate, this is a far worse joke than even i could have imagined.

Not sure how else to word it, because frankly, there's no other way.

All this looks like to me is a die-shrunk 8800 GTX that can do tri-SLI.

Well obviously it will be better than a 6800 Ultra. Of course depending on the cost, it may be more prudent of him to just buy an overclocked 8800GTS

Good post Taltamir. The links worked well for a change. It does appear that nVidia has binned the best of the G92 gpu's for its GTX and thrown on them slightly higher clocks and added the needed equipment for more than two card sli.. other than that.. the naming scheme is still kind of screwy and of course like all the G92's.. you don't get to fully own them, since that extra stuff is included to strip you of complete ownership.

Reminds me of shrink from 7800 to 7900 only the numbering scheme with some cards 9000 series and some 8800's does not look right.

My take is that nVidia should not call any of its cpu's 9000 series, and that the 9800 GTX would more accurately be called a 8800 GTX or at most 8900 GTX. The .8 ns memory should help it at higher resolutions.

Definitely not a whooping. Much closer to no difference at all. I'm not surprised at all, as I've been saying it won't be much faster than a G80.

Well, this is what you would expect from the frequency specs. They always did suggest only a minor improvement over a 512 GTS, the kind you would see on a factory overclocked version.

I'm guessing that the only reason they're releasing this thing at all is to be able to discontinue production of the (larger and more expensive) G80 chips while still having something capable of tri-SLI. It's more of a cost reduction for them than having anything to do with performance, especially since they have the GX2 already for the bragging rights.

Considering it scored a grand total of 1 Frame per Second higher than an 8800ultra in Crysis at 1920 x 1200, It is definitely not an ass whooping king. I'd say for 1.6 years after a g80, gaining 1 frame is pretty darn lousy. The new lousy flagship is here!!! Collect All Three!

This is kinda sad... If it costs more than $300. A pair of 9600GT in SLI's already close to 8800 ultra, and that's only $300 (assuming you already have a SLI motherboard).

9800GTX x 3 would be the only way to get a sizeable increase in performance.

Nvidia's new marketing strategy for multi-GPU is solely there to sell more units and get more money.

... Wow

If every new gen card gained this kind of performance boost, we would still be enjoying our RivaTNT cards

You guys, you're looking at this all wrong. This is an attempt on Nvidia's part to make peace with ATI, to make amends for all the wrongs it has committed to its partner in the last couple of years. Now that the daughter of the king of Nvidia and the son of the king of ATI are married, things need no longer be so stormy with the relations between the two companies. Nvidia is now going to give back some of the market share that it - in its adolescent and brazen behavior - stole from ATI when it wasn't looking. Nvidia is tired of being the only king in town - he wants to share the wealth and spread the love.

Peace out, brother, peace out.

Those are pretty sad results. I hope not all 9800GTX benches look that bad. The only way this isn't horrible is if the price is in the $300 range. Then you basically bought an 8800 Ultra for $300 & that wouldn't be a horrible deal.

It's $299 - 349, and it outperforms Ultras considerably, wtf is everyone bitching about.
