99% system usage

I built a computer with a BE7 Abit MB, plenty of ram, 2.4 Ghz chip...upon installing XP pro, the actual system thread uses up to 99% of the CPU usage (and about 200-300k of memory). ANY clue what this could be attributed to? I've tried both settings for CPU in the bios, (100 and 133) it's not overclocked or anything of the sort. Also, tasks run fine, except the ones that need all the cpu usage.

If it was a rogue thread using it all, I could isolate the problem, but it's "system" Hah. PLEASE HELP =(

when you say "system" you mean the "system" process, not the "system idle process" right? is there a system idle process shown in your task manager? if so, how much cpu is it using.
if it was really an errant process eating cpu, your other apps shouldnt run fine.

the system IDLE process doesn't take up much, it varies. It's the system process (of the "SYSTEM" user) that is taking whatever it can, unless you demand something of the computer. For example, when playing a video file, or playing music, it won't take 99 percent, but a steady 78 percent, or whatever it needs to complete cpu usage. It's really, really wierd I've never seen this in all my days...

I could understand a virus, I could understand a process demanding tons, but this is bizarre, there's no way to track it down...

How much memory does "system" take up? And if you're playing videos, I take it that you have other programs installed? I'd run MSCONFIG and try to stop all programs from loading from the start to see if that would do it- or maybe safe mode would do that as well???

yo pmow, if you have SP1 installed, uninstall it. it will work fine then...I have completely different hardware from you, but I can't install SP1 either for the same reason. I thought it was a software conflict, until I rebuilt my PC and it still did it. The first thing I installed was SP1, and boom, 99-100% CPU performance. It's a bish, but really, who needs service packs?

btw you aren't alone, I found others w/ the same prob...stupid MS

I wish it was SP1, I however didn't install it, and don't advise anyone to do it either.

When trying to play video, it did have programs, but I subsenquently formatted and reinstalled clean, no programs, not even a video driver (except std. vga or whatever) and STILL doing the 99% thing.

Memory is still 200-300k

darn. sorry to hear that, I hope you sort it out...my solution is easy i just don't install SP1...i'd be eager to hear of any other solutions, perhaps if one comes up I can install SP1 and try it ... not like I care about having SP1 that much tho
