Existing directv customer can purchase a Tivo for $100. Shipping is $20. A monthly fee is $5. Use Netscape, it will not give you error; when use IE, error occurs, you need to call the number -- they will ask you "who is your friend?", if so, give them a local dealer's name should do.

You need a code to get this deal.

You must be smoking the good stuff - nobody in their right mind would want a Replay over TiVo.

Commerical advance is great for replay tv; but, mostly tivo is better. Somking, either one.

Yup. What KrustyVT said. TiVo is so much better IMHO. If you have a Series2 TiVo, I'll trade ya a 5040.

Anyhow the $99 DirecTiVo is a hella deal

Ummmm...........no

I've had both and the DISH PVR is no TIVO.

The PVR 510 only has ONE tuner. So you can't watch a program and record another at the same time.

TIVO has season pass. If Friends has a special one hour episode, TIVO records it. The PVR records only the first 30 minutes.

etc, etc, etc.

The TIVO has some of it's own quirks but it's a different beast. Like comparing a 911 to a VW beetle.

You don't know how lazy I am, when I sink in the sofa, I don't even want to lift a finger. Actually, when TVing and dining at the same time, commerical advance becomes so nice; if commerical are not extremely DARN LOUD this days, I really don't mind them.

Thank you for the information, it is time for some tivo learning.

I just traded in my Tivo for a ReplayTV. I like being about to connect to my home network and burn recorded videos on the computer. Tivo just doesn't offer that feature. Tivo was very easy to use though. OTherwise they seem similar.

well you can do it if you are techie check some tivo forums...

but the deal breaker is its 1gb per hour with dtivos cause they record the actual mpeg stream as opposed to replays that are analog and dont get 1gb per hour by far at PERFECT SIGNAL/PICTURE EXACT STREAM COPY sorta thing dtivos do....

basically dtivos record identical to the live stream... replays and standalone tivos do not and they dont get near the hours per gig...

i have a couple dtivos modded for 240 hours or so recording at perfect quality

try that with a replay or standalone.....

That's too bad, my standalone TiVo allows me to stream video over my network, extract video to my computer and answer web requests to allow for remote program scheduling from anywhere.

I've been waiting a long time to get a Tivo and this seems like a great deal because I have DirecTV also. Is there the possibility that this Tivo can be upgraded (HD size), and hacked (so I can save my TV shows off onto the PC and burn them to DVD?) ... Also is it possible to pay $250 to make the unit a lifetime Tivo member rather than pay $5/month like with other Tivos? Thanks to everyone for helping to answer my questions ... I'm at work now, but once I get home I'll have to research this too

Absolutely! Any TiVo currently in production can very easily be upgraded for capacity. Check out The TiVo Community for full upgrade instructions. Series 1 DirecTiVos can be hacked (with a little linux knowledge) to extract video. Do NOT ask about that on the TiVo Community boards, search elsewhere. DirecTV no longer offers the lifetime sub option, but there is NO charge if you subscribe to the top package. BTW, the lifetime on TiVos is now $299. Considering the payback at $5/month ($60/year), it's a 5 year payoff. By that time you probably want to upgrade to newer equipment anyway.

The DirecTIVO has some advantages and disadvantages over the regular TIVOS. see www.tivocommunity.com for more infor but a few of the differences

Directivo - direct stream no loss of signal
Series I TIVO - hackable including transfer to computer, remote programming etc

Both are hardrive upgradable

DirecTiVo's can be connected to a home network by hacking the unit to enable the USB ports on the back, and then plugging in a USB ethernet adapter.

The ReplayTV comes with that functionality out of the box for $150 (40 hr unit). For a 40 hour series 2 tivo its around $250+ then you need to upgrade to the HMO option which I believe costs ~ $60-$100 more. Even then I have heard no reports of people being able to upload video to a PC without major hacking...just allows you to get programming updates over the web (big deal). The Directivo's do not allow HMO functionality at all and have no plans of integrating that in the future (which was why I had to return mine). The service is more expensive for Tivo as well. The remote scheduling is cool in concept but I can't really see using that feature ever...unless you are a total TV addict.

Anyhoo, I just spent a month using tivo and will be hooking up my Replay this week so I'll have first hand experience with both soon. The Replay does seem like a much better deal though.

You can't. I explored this issue thoroughly on all the Tivo forums and the unanimous answer was that you can't without an assload of hacking, and even then it seemed like a crapshoot.

Just placed my order for the DirecTivo. Glad to see that they're including free installation with it, because I'd like for the guy to run another cable from my dish down to the house so I record and watch at the same time, and have him run another cable to install the old receiver in my roommate's bedroom. I also figure while he's up there that I'll have him install the 3rd satellite receiver for my oval dish so I can get all of the HDTV channels.
