The 9mm Pistol Program was a Congressionally-directed Non-Developmental Initiative to standardize DoD with NATO and field one handgun for all United States armed services. Beretta of Italy was awarded a multi-year contract for delivery of over 500,000 pistols. The contract award stipulated that production of the weapon must transition from Italian to US production after two years. The US Army is the lead service in this program.

NATO and logistical problems. If all NATO members use the same bullets the supply and transportation of ammo is greatly simplified.

My pop has always said the same thing about the chinese troops that they cacked in Korea. He said they would just keep coming till their body was literally dismembered from taking hits. They would find their cheeks stuffed with some sort of opium/heroin pasty sh!t.

I'll respectfully disagree. If you can use highly expanding slugs it helps the 9, but, as Tominator pointed out, the Geneva convention bans them in combat. With ball ammo there is no comparison.

I just prefer the .45 myself. "Fanboy" I believe is what you on ATOT call that.

.45 cal is awesome. I miss my Detonics that was stolen shortly after the Gulf War. Still have the Gold Cup I bought to replace it.

However, if the standard issue, 40-60 year-old .45 Govt models issued to troops during the 70s, 80's and 90's could have hit the broad side of a damn barn WITHOUT going through a nutroll, then DA or DOD may have reconsidered replacing it. The accuracy on those old-timers, during the time I worked on them, was absolutely horrible because of a number of factors - sights, maintenance, worn parts, quality of replacement parts. On top of that, effective training wasn't exactly the greatest either. Of course anybody who knew anything packed a personal Colt, Detonics or Thompson .45 that they purchased with their own money and took care of.

<rant>Anyone here ever received a case of twenty or so M1911s and been taken to the task of replacing the barrels and bushings? No, not with the cool, quality civilian stuff you buy out of a gun magazine that actually works. I could have only wished for such a blessing back in the day. What a mess! I'm talking about the re-parkerized junk and substandard parts we received from GS at depot.

Then you get some dumb@ss Captain or LT who had shot a pistol only once during IOBC or IOAC. "I can't hit with this thing. You aren't doing your job." Well sir, we replaced the worn parts and test fired the weapon. The weapon shoots fine out to 25m Sounds like you need to learn how to shoot. Never had that problem with real pistol shooters.
