I'm in a stressful period in my life and forgot all about the contest.
Could I join in? My folding name is mike9o.
I'll start reactivating my rigs today.

I notice that somebody named Anonymous has had a lot of production for the TeAm since the race started. Is that the default name for someone who doesn't enter a username? Since there's nobody named Anonymous in the race, I think that might mean that somebody in this race forgot to fill in their username on some machine.

I was hoping this had been fixed, but I see another 30,000-point WU was submitted today. Please check your rigs!

well, I just killed a 660 ti card. May have to get a 980 now. So my ppd will be down a little. Ahhh the smell of burnt electronics in the morning !!!

So what do you think

This one ? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-079-_-Product

or is it worth the extra for this one ? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-682-_-Product

Or some other one ?

And please hurry. I need to order this today if I want to contribute its use to the race.

I would go for the EVGA card. These cards run very cool so no need for the triple fan cooling.

Remember these cards are dogs for core 18 WUs. ~80K PPD. For core 17 9201, close to 400K PPD.

Which means you should install Linux on whatever machine you use them on.

Oh, wait, you're on the other team. So you shouldn't install Linux until or unless you get switched to our team.

The 970 is just a way better PPD/$ card.

You could almost get 2 ASUS models, from Amazon for the amount you're thinking about plunking down on the Gigabyte.

Yes, you should be able to get over 300 PPD on the GTX970. Also these cards overclock quite well so a reference card is cheaper. The superclocked/megacoolers are just marketing gimmicks.

I have a Gigabyte GTX 980

Here's some overclocking and power consumption numbers that I posted on the folding forum in late september.

I have a Kill-a-Watt power meter at the wall on this 64-bit linux mint 17 LTS system:

Intel 3930K, Asus x79 sabertooth MB, Gigabyte GTX980 Nvidia reference design (Model #: GV-N980D5-4GD-B)

Power readings (SMP-10, project 6348, GPU core 17, project 9201)

Full load with 980@1252MHz (no overclock): TPF (1 min 38 sec), 387 watts total power
Full load with 980@1452MHz (+200 MHz overclock)): TPF (1 min 28 sec), 401 watts total power
GPU Folding on Pause (980@135 MHz): 263 watts total power
Both GPU and SMP folding on pause: 114 watts total power

980 from Idle to 1252MHz (no overclock): 124 watts
980 from Idle to 1452MHz (+200 MHz overclock): 138 watts

Does the 970 also have a problem on core 18's ? I was going to put the card in the machine where it failed, a 3930k running xp64. I also am worried about how much work it takes to install under Linux. I have an SR2 board with 2 5639's dedicated to folding on ubuntu, I could put it in there ??

970 is the same chip as 980, but with a cut-down number of cores. They'll both behave the same with regards to projects and fah cores.

Linux certainly looks like the best way to maximize PPD with those cards.

GLeeM is folding with a GTX970. GLeem, can you give us some feedback on WUs you are seeing?

I certainly wouldn't use the beta flag since most of the new GPU WUs are core 18.

I think the SR2 board would be ok but you'll need to install the latest Nvidia drivers to get the new maxwells to work.

I guess I could move my 980 to a windows machine to see how it goes, but I'll lose ppd for the race.

Don't loose points !!! Anyway, I have 3 cards that get core 17 or 18, 2/3rds, 17's, a 290x, a 780, and a 780ti. The 2 560ti cards were getting mostly the same units, but once in a while got the openmnru (or whatever) standard cores. So I am tempted to try a windows box. I could spend 2 weeks trying to get it to run under linux, and loose a bunch of points doing that. That box gets 150k ppd with 24 cores/threads.

OK, so right now my 780ti is getting 250k on a core 18, but my remaining 660ti is getting 5k. So the bottom line is, how hard is it to install nvidia drivers on ubuntu ? I have a 560ti card I can test with. If I stay windows, I need a 780ti, if I go linux (ubuntu) I can get a 980.

Team, help me decide !

A little late.
My GTX 780 is doing way better than the GTX 970 or it seems that way. The 780 is steady all the time at ~185,000 ppd. The 970 usually seems to get ~70,000 ppd WUs. Sometimes I see it occasionally gets a P9201 for 245,000 ppd.

I think Markfw900 did right with the 980 as FAH should eventually get it working to their advantage and then he will be happy.

The ISP Telia has become the target of DDoS-attacks of massive proportions. I can connect to the net approx. one time of 5 and therefore my production will go down.

Here are the stast as of December, 12, 2014:

We have new milestone makers:
Ken_g6: 3 000 000 points
Neurodog: 6 000 000 points
Brownstone: 26 000 000 points
GLeeM: 27 000 000 points.

Now somewhat OT:
"And winter is coming" (Eddard Stark)
We have the second winter storm blowing, "Alexander", and it is freezing cold. Not quite hurricane strength, but it will get worse before morning.
We have wood for three days indoors (for the wood burner - heater) batteries for the torches, plenty of candles, a gas stove with plenty of gas, food and water stored for three days or more. The computers may go down, the internet and TV too, and civilization may end, but we will manage. "And winter is coming"
