I was looking to replace my s5 with more of a phablet device. I may wait it out and see what happens in a few months. If the note 4 gets lollipop and I can compare.

I think Ill hang on to my OnePlus until someone releases a phone with the Snapdragon 810 chip. Will probably get a 6+ 128GB through work and sell it.

I do not find it that surprising if you compare display area vs. battery size Nexus 5 has a better ratio. Then you add the predominately white web based test and the older generation AMOLED (that's the only rational explanation I can think of for the big difference from the Note 4) and the results are here. It's true that this was tested with pre-release software, but I would be surprised if there would be a huge improvement on the release software.
As predicted, another smack across the face of the Nexus 6.
Brandon Chester on twitter said:
For anyone who's wondering, I re-ran the battery test on the Nexus 6 on the updated firmware and as expected there's no improvements.
...
It should also be noted that the panel uniformity means that half the panel is actually below 200nits. I could have been less kind.

Same thoughts. The high-end Androids this year are just flat out terrible in the sense they bring so little additional to the table compared to last year flagships. Might as well hold on to the latter and wait for 64-bit SoCs + better cameras.

Did he already break the protective glass covering camera lens?

Edit: I watched again and he most certainly chipped the glass. Me thinks the convex back is to blame.

Looks like a great phone.

Only real negative for me is the average battery, but unfortunately I am not a heavy user.

Its unfortunate that Google decided to go with a huge phablet to showcase Android 5.0.

I think the sizing alone will deter many people from buying or even trying the phone, which is ashamed since there are very few Android phones with pure Android. Maybe this was a favor to Motorola....

My only grip really so far with Google/Motorola is that there isnt a phone that is reasonably sized that has great software and a good/great camera.

The Moto X is close but the camera to me is very average.

Camera to me doesn't seem like it's a big issue. I rarely ever take pics. I consider myself a medium heavy user so I think the battery will be alright for my use.

If I didn't want this phone or didn't like it I have no idea what I would go with. My current phone is getting super old and needs replaced. If I didn't mind touchwiz the note 4 while more expensive would be my choice but I hate touchwiz. Every Samsung I have used has lagged at one point.

I'm eagerly awaiting my nexus 6 to get here on the 26th hopefully.

There is no "pure" Android any more. Although the line has blurred a lot, more accurate description is that Nexus phones run Google-skinned Android. What has been great about the franchise is that it is largely devoid of redundant functionality and the software design is consistent throughout, giving unified looks and even performance across the board. Also of importance is that Nexus phones are not tampered by carriers and their outrageously fishy attempts at deceiving ignorant consumers at the cost of the phones' integrity.

And of course there is the ease of getting root access and modding, which basically can fix aforementioned ails altogether. I personally enjoy firewall and adblock (a must) that require root access. Every time I use someone else's smartphone I am shocked to learn how many ads people deal with day to day.

Last but not least the Nexus phones were very affordable - meaning they made it easier for people like me to step outside the carriers' leashes to see what my options are. Even though I am back with AT&T postpaid now (and T-Mo prepaid) I made several cost-cutting conversations with its management based on my knowledge learned during the period I was using prepaid services. I owe much of my smartphone knowledge (which is better than average, I believe) to the Nexus devices.

This years Nexus devices changed the game, but it does not look like for the better. Whatever the motivating factor was, it seems to me the change in the direction of Nexus franchise took was not a success in the competitive environment.

You have to hand it to Samsung and Apple - despite all the criticism they receive they are usually a safer bet than the rest.

This is why rooting is great. You can remove touchwiz and use the launcher of your choice. No lag this way. The only problem is when you root you will lose knox which can limit your ability to use certain security features on the device and that means it won't work for certain business purposes. I may still get the note 4 myself if nothing changes. I like my s5 but a friend has the note 4 and I really dig the screen. So I think I could use more of a phablet device. I was all set on the nexus 6 but the hiccups of the device and android 5.0 on it kind of make me second guess and reevaluate what I want to do. I messed with my father's iphone6(not plus) and like it a lot. It is slick, smooth, but just a little kiddie to me. If the plus was a 1440p screen I might even consider that as a potential candidate because nothing I do on android is locked out of iOS. Still, the note 4 screen is impressive to look at to me even if the color accuracy isn't quite as good as the s5. I'm not that picky.

The note 4 and Samsung devices usually take some time to get root but I think it's been done already. The n6 looks more sleek to me. Note 4 is already more expensive since I would be buying it off contract anyway. I missed out on the $200 trade in offer a few months back too.

Won't be long before lollipop gets tweaks and adjustments to correct some software issues. I have 14 days to return the nexus 6 if it really doesn't pan out. Then I'll probably go with a moto x or xperia z3. Can't really wait for anything else to come out because my current phone will be dead by that time.

In the US, only the T-mobile & Sprint versions of the Note 4 have been rooted.

I'm not positive how it works but shouldn't an unlocked gsm device work on at&t as well as T-Mobile so you could root the device and have a choice?

Assuming the device has both att and t mobile bands you don't need to root it to get service on either one. As long as it's SIM unlocked and you buy off contract or your provider let's you unlock it.

The T-mobile version has most of the bands for at&t service, but it is missing at least 1 (might have been more, I don't remember now) that at&t uses for LTE. I couldn't find a listing of where at&t uses what band where so I passed on getting the t-mo version.

There was root on the S4 for vzw depending on what update you were on.
Still no luck on the bootloader.
Which is why no more Samsung on vzw for this guy.
Touchwiz hidden by Nova or whatever is OK for about a year, after that enough updates and time have passed that it's new rom time in my experience.
I didn't see any reason to think the Note 4 would be any different so I passed it over.

Not what I mean. At&t version no root, T-Mobile has been.

$50 more for the Verizon developer edition with a bootloader that can be unlocked with a fastboot command. Same "overall" price by storage if you have a micro-sd card lying around.

Not bad I'll consider this once my nexus arrives and I figure out how much the battery lasts me. The screen of the n6 looks good to me from the mkhb video review. But good to know that's an option.

Also, once the boot loader is unlocked will it always be like that even if I take ota updates? I'd hate to have it locked and not be able to flash other roms to get rid of touchwiz.

Ota updates will remove any root and such. Generally what I do is wait for custom Roms to show up using the new ota base.
