A-bit BP6 & Maxtor HD

Anandtech'rs:

I have a 30GB Maxtor HD and am trying to install Win2000. When formatting a 4 GB partition; it IS UNBELIEVEABLY SLOW. I mean at the rate it is going it will take close to a couple days to format 4 GB!!! If someone knows of a good guide (other than bp6.com) to installing win2000 w/ BP6 mobo PLEASE forward it here. Any/All help is always greatly appreciated.

Urgh, the combo made in hell. Ok, a couple of ideas, I assume you are using the highpoint controller because the IDE controller on the chipset I've never heard of doing such things. Try updating the BIOS of both the highpoint and the motherboard. On my BP6 system, ACPI has caused some fairly substantial problems before, so in the bios, set ACPI and power management to OFF. Set MPS version to 1.1. Download the latest highpoint drivers, version 1.28 and use those to install. If all that doesn't work, I can't help anymore, like I said, it's a combo made in hell.

The drives on my BP6 run on IDE33 - after lots of troubleshooting, as you're doing now, I gave up on the HPT controller.

Maxtor and BP6. I suspect it's almost entirely the highpoint controller at fault, cause I've never heard of such problems with any other controllers.

You can get updated BIOS at bp6.com

Updated win2k HPT366 drivers are at highpoint-tech.com, under drivers and then beta. Only the 1.28s seem to work for me, but I haven't tried them out for more than a two weeks or so and hangs/crashes can be extremely erratic.
