a cable modem problem...

i had cable modem installed last week. sometimes when i turn on the computer, the pc light will start blinking on and off and my comp would freeze for short seconds (about 2). is this due to packet loss? i called broadband tech service but their help sucks. waiting on specialist to call me. is it my cat5 cable? i checked the cables and everything is plugged in. this annoys me cuz when im looking at webpages, it starts happening. any help is appreciated. thanks. :|

What is happening is that it is negotiating with the router during the boot. I am not sure if this is the point of time when your ip is being leased but I can tell you that my computer does do the exact same thing and I don't believe that it is anything to worry about.

besides during the bootup, it also happens when i try to load certain webpages. gets very annoying.

Well, if the PC light on the cable modem blinks on and off, it means that the modem is not detecting that a computer is hooked up to it. What type of cable modem is it? IF you have checked your cable, you still may want to make sure it's not the cable by purchasing a new crossover cable (I had a problem I was blaming on other stuff until I replaced the cable, things worked fine until I would reboot, then Win2k would say network cable unplugged until i unplugged and re-plugged the cable in). Do any of the other lighs come on, such as the cable or test light (test lights double up as error lights on some cable modems). There probably isn't to much else you can do aside from wait for someone to take a look at the cable modem, see if it's defective. Other question is did you or the cable company install the nic in your computer?
