I saw this thread and it reminded me of something weird that happened to me a few days ago.

I was cleaning out some shelves in my garage and i had a 24 pack of coke cans that i haven't moved in a while. I noticed that the rags next to them were all brown and sticky, i thought hmm some may have exploded ok w/e.

as i went to clean up and throw away the coke cans i noticed that none of them had exploded, that they were all not deformed and still unopen...? how the F did all this coke leak onto my floor without any visible punturing of the can? did reverse osmosis happen or something due to the temperature fluctuations in the garage??

Your garage ever get cold enough to freeze water? It can produce tiny pinholes that you can't see.

I've got all the pepsi star wars cans packed in my garage. Never went though and drilled them or anything, and by now a couple are empty. If you dip it in a container of water you'd see some air escaping around then pop out area (most likely) or some other seemed location. Rather weird though picking up an empty and (apparently) sealed can.

it gets pretty close. this was the first thing i suspected, but when ran water over one of the cans I couldn't see any leaky spots. I should have submerged a can in water for a few days to see what would happen. You're probably right though that there are microscopic holes that arent visible.

I've had frozen cans do that, but after they thaw, they still hold pressure; probably less than stock though. I suspect the easy open tops.

the seal between the lid and the rest of the can isn't as good as you thought.

When I was a kid I would painstakingly break the seal of coke cans and let the coke run into a glass. Then I would put the can back in the fridge for a laugh.

This happened to me. We had a case of 24 cans of coke - about 5 years or so old. We noticed a bad smell - turns out the cans were leaking. All of them were still "sealed" in that the tabs were not open, but half of them were empty, half of the rest had liquid, but no pressure and the rest were sound. It seems that the coke ate through the aluminum and breached the integrity of the can, leaking through the bottom. For the cans we had, there were small (~1mm across) brown spots on the bottom, where it seems the coke had compromised the seal, then solidified to reseal the can.

Yeah... its more fun and easier just to shake the fuck out of it then put it back.

It'd been close to 100 here in PA last week, the can's probably expanded and contracted due from the extreme weather and some of the soda leaked out via tiny holes you cannot see.

Take a can of coke you had in the fridge, weight it and compare it to one you had in the garage if you want to see how much fluid leaked out.

This is why warehouse clubs like sam's keep the place cool enough all the time so this never happens.

When the cans are produced they are sprayed with a coating that prevents the Phosphoric acid from eating through the aluminum. This lining does have a life limit and the Phosphoric acid will eventually eat through the lining and eventually the aluminum.
