I want to get A+ certified, and am looking for any advice people here might have, like what study guides would be good, and if anybody has taken the new version of the test. I mainly wanna do it to help get a summer job as a technician somewhere, and to start down the long road of other certifications.

Thanks

That's just your opinion. The A+ was updated recently and then once more before that. So it is actually up to date at this time. Just to let the OP know, I got my current job with my A+, without it I would have never landed it, so the A+ is worth something, definitely.

I've seen complete morons pass the A+, but I guess it would be good resume material if the hiring person doesn't know their stuff

Seriously the objectives were recently updated for 2006 so it is up to date. It is no longer just about IRQs and parallel ports.

Nothing related to Geek Squad or any B&M store. Something that has to do with the IT field.

Take a look at the Exam Cram series. Good for people who already have basic knowledge of the subject and want to get into the "meat" of the test material.

I took my A+ when it first came out. The A+ test now is a no brainer. The test I took had DOS questions, like edlin usage and all sorts of old stuff most kids never heard of today. Go for it. Many jobs ask for it nowadays. Me, my 25 years on my resume speaks for itself.

A+ eh? lolz.... I have interviewed guys who were all "I got my A+ blah blah blah" and really to be frank those were the guys that knew the least, I guess maybe because the A+ gave them a false sense of knowledge? Personally I wouldn't waste the money, your better off with a MCSA/MCSE for Windows or Solaris/RHCE (IIRC) for un*x or if you want networking go with a CCNA/CCNP combo, those will get you 65k+ jobs if you know your stuff, an A+ MIGHT get you upwards of 38k if your lucky, you do the math...

A+ Certification by comptia was just updated about two months ago. I took it and passed. Basic computer stuff. A+ Certification is the #3 certification looked for in any IT individuals. (And often required by many many employers before you even get a interview.)

I agree that it is to easy and doesnt prove anything.

its like a college diploma. Its a waste of money, but you need to have that stinky piece of paper to categorize yourself in the job market as not being an absolute schmuk.

When I got my A+ I used a book called "A+ Q$A", or something like that. It was great for the hardware, a lot of the questions seemed to be word for word when I took the test. It isn't so great for the software/OS part though. Good luck.

There are quite a few good sites online that have free practice tests. Just search for "free A+", and you should be good to go.

But please do not get a job if you don't know what you're doing. I've had it up to here with A+ certified techs who are brain dead and can't think on their feet or do any reasonable amount of troubleshooting if their lives depended on it.

Went to Compusa, and had a little fun with "tech" guy. I asked him questions about a particular LGA775 motherboard.

Me: I'm interested in this mainboard, what processors will this run on?
Tech: Basically anything 2004 and up will work. A Athlon 64bit XP 3000+ or a Pentium Core should be fast enough.
Me: Oh really...thats nice...are you A+ certified?
Tech: Yes sir! Certified last month!

I couldn't stand the dude, he talked like he knew everything there is to know about PC Hardware.

Same thing with the MCSE. I got mine in 1999 and back then it was a truly worthless piece of paper. But it was put on my resume and I was hired because I had those 4 letters on my resume when others did not.

Sorry - got to jump in here.

The certification is not about doing a job - it is about getting a job.

You need the certification to get past the agencies, get past the know-nothing suits in personnel, and to get yourself an interview with the person who actually knows something from the IT department.

The agency bimbos and himbos, and the cretins in personnel need the certification so they can "understand" what you do and create some criteria to so they can reject technically brilliant people who refuse to play the certification game anymore.
