a CHKDSK question...

Whenever I run CHKDSK on my C drive it (the entire system) freezes at 72% and I have to reboot. I have tried it 4 or 5 times and it always gets hung up at the 72% mark. I have also noticed that when I run the full system scan with Norton AV 2002 it will also freeze up after 30 minutes or so.... I have tried running it from safemode, as well as having Norton system works do a chkdsk on reboot. Same results. Can anyone tell me what this might be and what I can do to correct the problem? The computer runs fine as far as I can tell but I would like to get to the root of this. My system specs are below. Thanks in advance.

Try setting it to run a chkdsk on bootup (before the GUI loads). You can do this by typing chkntfs /c c: .

kinda sounds like you have a video problem but the system also freezes before the GUI boots up. i bet your filesystem is corrupted or you have a lot of bad sectors towards the end of the drive. i would use the Windows chkdsk and do a full scan--if it seems like it cannot complete the chkdsk give your system at least another 30-60 minutes just in case it is not frozen. having a corrupted filesystem and a lot physical bad sectors can make win2k/xp seem like it is frozen. if it still cannot go through a chkdsk i would take the drive out and put it in another system running XP or win2k w/sp2 at least running as a slave and see if that system can perform a full chkdsk.

Try using the manufacturer's utility to scan the drive. You can find it on all the drive makers' websites in their utilities or downloads section. Just make sure you do the read-only scan, not the write scan or writing all zeroes.

How long does it hang?

Chkdsk can seem to hang for quite a long while if it hits a particularly nasty piece of corruption.

Let it sit for a while.

Chkdsk is generally really really good at finishing successfully if you let it.
