Ever read the Book Contact? One of the best parts in the Book which they unfortunately left out of the movie was very similar to this.

Ellie and Joss are down at the Smithsonian museums and there is a huge pendulum in there and during a conversation about faith Ellie puts here face where the 2 ton pendulum had already swung saying she would not flinch because here faith in science is absolute. Well she flinched..

Why does that take courage? It's physics 101, as long as he doesn't step forward it's guaranteed to miss. That's why he uses a wall, it's a fixed point of reference so that he can be sure he doesn't move into the arc. It would take more courage to repeat the experiment as shown in post #6. Without a wall it can go wrong, with a wall it won't.

Not sure if you're serious. Walter Lewin was very highly regarded as one of the best physics professors out there.
