A couple of questions about IBM's 75 GXP hdd

I was wondering whether a new IBM 75 GXP Deskstar hdd should function on a bx mobo with no ATA channels whatsoever, in other words, plain old IDE. Because, as it stands now, the hdd is not being detected at POST even though a CDROM drive which is set as a slave to it on the same chain is being detected and working properly. Any ideas?

Have you jumpered it correctly? Is it set to Master? Take the CD-ROM out and see what happenens. Is the power cable plugged in?

yeah, I'm pretty sure I set the jumper and power cables properly. I'll see what happens if I drop the CDROM off the chain. btw, does the position of the drive on the chain matter? In other words, can I have the master at the end of the cable just as well as the slave?

edit--- and one final question for ya; can I use a plain old IDE cable with this hdd?

thanks

Yea you can. Usually the postion on where the drive doesn't matter. But to be sure, make it master and take the CD-ROM out and have it on the end of the cable.

I hope the following is of some help:
---------------
Installing a New Hard Disk Drive:

1. There are a number of ways to install a new hard drive and transfer your existing operating system, applications and data from your old drive to the new. Some may prefer to use full-featured imaging utilities such as Norton Ghost or Drive Image, but buying those programs really is not necessary just to install a new drive. All drive manufacturers provide free utilities for installing and configuring new drives. These utilities usually come with the retail versions of new drives, or may be downloaded from the manufacturer?s website.

2. Here are links to sites for downloading the major manufacturer?s hard drive installation and configuration utilities:

IBM: [L]http://www.storage.ibm.com/techsup/hddtech/welcome.htm#Installation[/L]
Maxtor: [L]http://www.maxtor.com/library/softwareDownload.html[/L]
Quantum: [L]http://service.quantum.com/softsource/softmenu.htm[/L]
Seagate: [L]http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/drivers/[/L]
Western Digital: [L]http://www.westerndigital.com/service/ftp/drives.html#dlgtools[/L]

3. 2. A recent article that explains procedures for installing and configuring a new hard drive may be found here:

--------------------------

Setting up an ATA/66 or ATA/100 Hard Disk Drive:

If you order a retail version of an ATA/100 or ATA/66 hard disk drive you get the drive, standard packaging, an instruction manual, and, usually, an 80-wire 40-pin IDE cable and a drive configuration and management utility on a floppy disk. If you order an OEM version usually you get just the drive. You may download from the manufacturer?s website the setup utility and instruction manual, however.

The 80-wire 40-pin IDE cable is compatible with ATA/33, ATA/66 or ATA/100 drives. The cables? blue connecter should be connected to the motherboard or to an add-in controller card. Usually the cables? black connecter (at the other end of the cable) goes to the master drive on that channel, and the cables? gray connecter (the one in the middle) goes to the slave drive. Of course, you need to properly set the jumpers on the drives to match their master or slave position.

To run the drive in ATA/100 or ATA/66 mode you may have to enable that feature on the drive with the setup utility, since drives when manufactured may be set to ATA/33 by default to insure maximum compatibility. You also must use an 80-wire cable for the drive to function at ATA/66 or ATA/100 and all drives on that cable must be ATA/66 or ATA/100. If you use a 40-wire cable, or if the drives are not properly enabled, then the drives will revert to ATA/33 mode. Finally, your motherboard or your add-in controller card must support ATA/66 or ATA/100 and must be so enabled, and your operating system must be enabled for DMA transfers.

BTW:

If you watch closely the monitor when your PC is started you should see the boot process list the various drives that are connected to your system. If the IBM HDD is not listed, then something is wrong with the HDD or its connection, the jumper settings, etc.

If the HDD is listed at start-up, but is not recognized by the OS, then the HDD probably is not formatted properly. In that case see the above link or the instructions that came with the drive.

BX motherboards should support at least ATA33. Which motherboard do you have?

Try going to that page Ulysses gave: IBM Storage Software Download Page and get the IBMATASW utility to force the drive to work in ATA33 mode.

Not having ATA100 capability severly handicaps the drive's performance. You should really consider buying an ATA100 card. After all, you shelled out quite a bit of money for the 75GXP.

I have a AOpen AX6BC Pro Gold flashed with the latest bios, so I don't think it's the mobo causing my problems. I'm starting to think that the hdd may have been damaged during shipping because I purchase two of these drives and I installed the other one in my fathers computer and it's running flawlessly. Is it possible for one drive to get damaged but not the other even when they're shipped in the same package? In any event, the motherboard refuses to detect this hdd via the auto-detect option in the bios. Any ideas? Should I start contacting the guy who sold me the drives (oem)?

If practical, switch the HDD with the one in your father's PC & see what happens - then keep the good one

LOL! I like the way you think!

Actually, I just might try his HDD to see, once and for all, whether it's my incompetence or the drive's causing this. Thanks for all the advice.
