Nobody's interested :|
I'm crankin out the WUs too! Currently ranked #6116 out of 10206 after only a few hours of crunching ~105 blocks completed in an average of only 4 minutes each! Gotta love that kind of production It's great to be involved in a DC project where one can feel like they're *actually* making a difference whereas with SETI it takes a fleet of computers years to get anywhere in the rankings. Not to knock on SETI, I've done it for a couple years but my stats just don't make me feel like all that donated time has made any kind of a difference...
Anyway, if anyone out there is looking for a new DC project that doesn't put too much stress on one's system, and you can actually see the results (4 min. avg. WU completion time on a modest AXP 2800+ @ 3000+ w/1GB RAM ain't too shabby), why not give this a shot? What can it hurt? Heck, my system crunched over 100 WUs in just a few short hours. I'm sure some of you out there can spare a few hours of CPU time to help out a fledgling cause?

Japanese digital TV will become encrypted/copy protected in the near future
There is an initiative trying to break the planned encryption key
For all those asking:
ALL THIS PROCESS IS COMPLETELY LEGAL* AND THERE IS NO PRIZE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT IN IT
*It might be illegal in the U.S.A, because of the DMCA, so if you live in the U.S. then you might not want to run this.

So basically, a group of folks are upset that the Japanese are planning on installing encryption, and this initiative is to crack that encryption.

"It might be illegal" in the US is an understatement.

Is the initiative welcomed by the Japanese firms planning on implementing encryption?

in the past, Team Anandtech as stayed away from these types of DC "projects". Nothing to stop individuals from participating, but I would hate to see the Team Anandtech name associated with what could be considered (or is) illegal, or unethical.

"worthy cause" ? I personally don't think so.

just my opinion.

About the only anime that I watch on a regular basis is Inuyasha. Now, if I could just find it available on DVD.

Back to the topic - Well put RaySun2Be! IMHO, this is reminiscent of another project to crack the X-Box security so as to load other OS's on it.

I don't see what the big deal is... If the owners of the copyrights of these shows were P.O.'d about it then why haven't they sued *ANYONE* yet? The fact is, they hate to give product out for free, but at the same time they love the free publicity it gives them! I have a *huge* anime collection (literally thousands of hours) some I purchased on DVD, some I've obtained through "other" means I don't just go out on teh intarweb and d/l as much anime as I can for free, I'll get some of a series and, if I like it, chances are I'll go buy the DVDs as long as they didn't F up the U.S. release, of course. Unfortunately, a *lot* of U.S. releases of anime have been fubar'd by the U.S. distributors so anime fans have to rely on fan-subbed versions of their favorite anime to avoid this utter crap and still be able to enjoy the anime they love.
You can argue ethics all day long, but it's not going to change anything. The facts remain the same: those who obtain their livelihoods by producing this anime aren't exactly calling for anyone's head over this, so don't get your panties in a bunch

Let's use an analogy, shall we?

I like Halloween. It's a fun time of the year. A common practice during the Halloween season is to place carved pumpkins out on the front porch.

It is also fairly common for kids to sneak up to said porches, steal said pumpkins and smash them on the street or sidewalk.

According to your logic, if I didn't want them to steal my property, I should have arrested them (if I could catch them) or not placed the pumpkins out there in the first place.

You see, young one, its stealing and its wrong, no matter how easy said stealing is.
