Well, with our beloved DOOM 3 being released real soon (heres hoping anyway).

I was thinking about what I would like to see in this game since the original DOOM is what got me into computers and gaming.

After seeing FPS evolve into what we see them today I hope the dudes over at id-Software keep the game kinda like the first two.

Instead of some great story line that was never seen before I want to play DOOM 3 like the old way.

you know, start the level with just a basic weapon then realize that their are some demons around then you have to run like hell to find the double-barrel shotgun (oh yea) while the imps are throwing their fireballs at you..

And then you find out that you need to get the correct color key card to open the door to proceed to the next level where you are now introduce to things like those flying tomato thingys which shoot out fireballs from their mouth.

Oh! and don't forget with the id-Software programmers they like to put in those secret walls and doors to get to the neat things that the game generally offers that you can see them from a distance but the only way to get to them is to find that secret way....I'm talking about pure old school FPS love here, baby!!!!

I remember the first time I heard the Cyber-demon (I think that was the name) you know that one which is about 60 feet tall and launches about 4 rockets from one arm and has a machine gun on the other, I mean when I heard that scream I thought WTH was that ?????

Scared the living daylights out of me...hehe, that was good stuff. Here's hoping like heck that DOOM 3 will actually live up to its billing.. So far id-Software has been great on all of their FPSs.

We'll know soon 'nuf.

Another old school boy reporting in! I remember the first time that dam Ubermutant in Spear of Destiny was chasing me down, it must have been 2 in the morning and I nearly crapped my pants. Good stuff.

To you maybe...not me, I love id-softwares gameing style.

And besides I've been playing FPSs for a long time and they are pretty much all mindless running around and shoot anything that moves type of game, which I frigg'n love.

After coming home from my piece of poop job I really don't need to be in a Eienstein mind set to enjoy my games, heck if you want a good FPS try Raven-Sheild or Ghost-Recon now those are super and realistic so that you can get killed by one shot from a tango.

So if I want serious, I will play some type of military or special-Ops type of sim/game, which btw I love those type too....having said that I will say that "Far Cry" was and still is boring as hell now to me.

Barons of hell could send a shiver down my spine, and I agree with you. And from the videos seen it looks like it's gonna be superb, and it also seems like they've done a lot on the sound side of the game. And that's basically what none other games (except for AvP, playing human ) have done. Doom was scary mostly because of the sound. As soon as you know where the enemy is all your focus moves towards killing it, and it turns into action. But moving around in dark corridors hearing all kind of scary sounds, and not knowing if the enemy comes through a wall, droping from the ceiling etc., that's what I'm looking forward to in DoomIII

You know it seems like 90% of the people that don't like games like the Quakes and Dooms usually complain about how lame the gameplay is. For me it's not about gameplay it's all about atmosphere. Doom, Quake, QuakeII Halflife Wolfenstein...all atmosphere. The abitlity to convince the eye, ear and mind that you are actually there. Anyone playing a shooter for it's compelling storyline or well scripted puzzles needs a little education in gaming.

Very good reply. You put it perfectly, that is what makes playing an FPS so fun, the atmosphere. I love when its all dark and quiet and you think you are safe and BOOM out jumps a monster and your heart literally skips a beat.

original doom was the best, the first game to effectively use lighting, floor/door triggers and ambushes to scare the bejesus out of you.

I remember the first time me and my bro were playing the game, we came across the invisible bull thing, we were like WTF!

Have you played PainKiller CA? Just wondering because it seems like it would be more up your alley. I enjoyed Far Cry more than any game I've played in a long time but I got bored with PainKiller 30 minutes into it because there was no story line and it was just running around shooting creatures. Graphics were superb but the game couldn't hold my attention without any real objectives other than kill at will. I think you'd really like it if you haven't already played it.

I hope Doom3 is a happy median of both types of games.

Just wondering, what did you like about Far Cry? I have found it hard to enjoy Far Cry aside from staring at the pretty graphics. The gameplay seems rather repetitive to me (though I haven't gotten that far into the game). The guns all seem to similar to me, and there seems to be a lack of variety of enemies so far. I got tired of the cycle of scouting with the binoculars, sneaking up to the enemies, and picking them off. :/ Does it get better?

gotta have that sound of a distant door/wall opening to release some baddies.

temped to go find the latest jDoom and have a bash, but that'd be like having half a peice of nicotine gum while waiting for ciggy break - just takes that edge off, but that means the real deal isnt quite so satisfying.

Just the demo and I thought the demo was excellent, at lest to me, however the game play according to the reviews that I have read is almost and let me repeat that, almost like a Serious Sam type of game.

Which isn't a bad thing but the Serious Sam type gets old to me too. Its like this, the player enters a certain area where its fairly quite and then after a few gunshot/shotgun shots then all hell breaks loose

and then the player is on a full run until most of the goblins/demons/aliens/zombies/monsters are dead having said that, to me it really does take a certain type of programmer to make a game where there will be a large amount of goblins/demons/aliens/zombies/monsters and just enough health around to make the game very entertaining while still a fun challange and still not get bored and repetitive and this is where the cream-of-the-crop are, like id-Software, Epic (Unreal), Raven (Heretic) Valve.

To me the guys who did Far Cry (Cry-O, I think) must still develope the skills for making a great FPS, yeah, they have the graphics down and plot but their repetitive game-play style coupled with no hot-keys for in game saving was a huge turn off for me (this is just my opinion so no flames on me please )

But back to the question: Knowing me I will get it one day!

loved doom originals, expecially boss's at end. Wasnt any internet here, knew nothing about cheats, so you played it , i mean played it...
I also loved/hated Alien vs Pedator when you were sneaking thru dark halls of flickering light and glimpse a alien coming at you. Just like in the movie, guns blazing till empty LOL Or running outside to get to a door to close with hords or aliens on your tail, back pedaling, shooting ... Just great..

I liked Fary Cry, once.. Havent played it again. Have played AVP over and over. Hmmmm, that must say something.. All we need is releases of old games we loved with todays graphics

I believe doom 3 will be an experience unlike any other. The feeling you got when playing games like doom, half-life, unreal, farcry, halo. I WANT IT NOW!!!!

I remember those large Labyrinth type levels with the low ceilings. Walking round them finding your way only to have one of thise pinky bull type creatures snort like a pig from behind and scare the hell outta ya. ("Snorting like a pig from behind...reminds me of....well, we'll leave that there"). Also the sort of "HMM HMM" noise in the background when you just knew something was going to happen but just didn't know when.

The original Doom made me jump more time that I care to remember. Superb game.

Doom3 as already publicised to hell will focus on dark moody levels that "WILL" scare the hell out of you just like the oldie. However, I don't believe there will be hords of demon attacking at the same time...shame, crying shame....

Is it me or is the 16 August 2004 miles away...

I'm sure some modder will make it (surely?), but it wont be as good as the real deal and people without fat internet wont be able to just open their boxes, install game then go to LAN co-op...
