You drive it for the next 15k miles.

There is a major service at 90k miles.

Who pays the cost of the service?

Edit: I'm already paying for it you fucknuts. It's a fucking question. Sand in the vag, no?

If they gave it to you, you pay it...

Maybe if you're like 17 and your parents just gave you the car then it would be nice if they paid... but even then they gave you the car.

If its like some random aunt that gave you the car then you pay.

You, unless the family member did it, which probably would have shown up shortly after getting it from the family member.

1) Are you borrowing the car for free? You pay.
2) Do you need the car to run? You pay.
3) Did you buy the car at 75k? You pay.

I was going to say it depends on the situation but I can't imagine a situation in which you wouldn't pay. If, maybe, the maintenance was for a common model defect and you didn't really need the car, maybe the owner would bear some responsibility. But even then 15k is a hell of a lot of miles so if you were borrowing it at no cost then you should pay.

You, unless the car is shared and the family member will be using it in the future.

Define major service. If it was an underlying issue the previous owner caused, such as accidental damage that was not disclosed it may be nice if they owned up.

EDIT However in 99% of cases I can not see any scenerio in which the current owner, which I assume is you would be responsible for the repair.

Who owns the car?

Heck if I could get back all the money I've spent on fixing mine by having the previous owner who put the majority of the miles on it pay for it I'd love that. But it never works that way.

My guess is timing belt. 90,000 is about right for that.

LOL, if you bought the car off of someone you didn't know, would you go back to them in 15K and say "fix it"?

Stupid question if the car is now yours.

There's no "yours or mine". They didn't sell it to you, but it isn't yours. You are currently driving it.

You may end up getting another car, at which point you will NOT sell the current car, you will return it to the family.

"Passed down" car, so to speak.

You're driving it (as in primary driver), you're responsible for maintenance.

Definately your responsibility then. Someone has graciously lent you a car for free, you have used it for 15000 kilometers, when maintenance is needed you have to own up to it.

So... "Hey, thanks for letting me drive the car for 15k miles, now pay for the service"?
That doesn't come off as a tad ungrateful to you?

How do you think they got so rich? It wasn't all the handouts they doled around!
