A few TQ questions (new to the game)

I just got the Gold Edition from Amazon, got it installed and no time to play it yet but am trying to do some research for fun classes (solo to me without depending on anyone else) to play as.

I was looking at:

Storm + Spirit (Oracle)

Hunting + Spirit (Bone Charmer)

Warfare + Earth (Battlemage)

Warfare + Dream (Harbringer)

I understand that to use Dream, I have to use the exp pack which I have. Do I need to launch TQ, play through it then do the same as TQIT? Or just play through TQIT only?

Are there any advantages to playing TQ until level 65?

Any tips would be nice and appreciated.

I have never used any of those class combinations so I am unable to provide you with any advice there. Harbinger is probably going to be one of the most powerful of that selection as despite not playing TQ:IT for over a year now, I seem to remember that combination standing out.

As far as launching goes, I would not worry and I would just launch through TQ:IT. It saves any hassle and launching TQ:IT gives you all of the benefits of TQ plus all of the benefits that IT brings right from the get-go (and it brings a lot from what I've heard).

Tips:

Don't die and kill the monsters

Seriously it's like any other Action RPG / Hack 'n Slash. Keep your resistances up, make sure you keep potions on you and be wise with your skill/stat point increases. There is a small respec option for your skill points (but not for Mastery types, Mastery levels or stat points)

For clarification on the Mastery/Mastery skill point above, you have your main mastery type such as Storm or Spirit. Then within them you have a Mastery level which you need to increase to certain levels to access skills within the skill tree. A slightly more complex and involved system than Diablo 2 but I think a superior one.

Beware the difficulty curve of some of the bosses. I played this game with a friend and you end up hitting named mobs that pretty much one shot you

Great game if you can find 1-2 players to play with you. The different combination of classes that you can put together in a party is what makes the game interesting.

Thanks for the replies. I am working a bunch over the next two weeks so I have plenty of time to look over stuff.

No one class or class combination is really better than any others. Its mostly your play style. For pure damage they say a war/rogue combo is pretty good.
As a matter of fact, if you dig around google for a bit there are many sites with whole sections devoted to this issue. Tons of people have analyzed the pros and cons of every combination.

And like already stated, once you install Immortal Throne you only ever run the execute for that. It adds another campaign right at the end of the old one, so when you beat Typhon you just go through the warp gate and into the next region. It also adds tons of cool stuff to the regular game, like artifacts, the Dream mastery and loads of equipment.

For me I have played and beaten the basic difficulty with:
Storm/Earth
Rogue/Hunter
War/Defense
Hunting/War
Defense/Rogue
Spirit/Nature
And Dream/Spirit

Most of the classes have just a handful of active abilities that I really like, and some have a good selection of nice passive abilities. Most of the rest of the powers just arent that great. Thats nice though cuz it makes it easy for me to focus on the good stuff. In particular I like a lot of the Rogue abilities, passive and active.

To sum up what others have said:

  • Only play TQIT; NEVER play vanilla Titan Quest
  • Install the unofficial fan patch
I recently beat normal difficulty with a harbinger, which is usually esteemed as the 2nd or 3rd most powerful class. He's very powerful and can deal out incredible damage, but his defense and resistances are quite low (partially my fault for focusing on dps equipment). I think I died 12 times in normal difficulty. After a few of my deaths in act 3 came from being stunned by bosses, I upped my stun resistance to 70% and never had that problem again.

I might play through epic with the harbinger, but I got bored with just the hack-and-slash style. I started over with an oracle. Oracles are also very powerful. It's basically been a cakewalk through act 1 using squall, but I'm sure it'll get harder eventually.

With a decent build, acts 1 and 2 are really easy, and then 3 and 4 get a lot more difficult. I can't comment on how epic is since I only played a couple hours on that difficulty.

www.titancalc.com is a very useful website. It allows you to share your build with others. It also allows you to see the progression of a skill when more points are put into it.

Here's my harbinger. Here's the oracle I want by the end of the normal difficulty (or something similar to that).

I'm also a late comer to TQ but what kalrith said is 100% right. Also you might want to try Hunting & Dream (Haruspex) if you like bows, as I do. One of the most powerful builds around, here is a great guide:

Also, it may be cheating but as I love to collect stuff and always play solo, TQ Vault is a great side program to have.

The main drawback is the lack of variation, the map and monster location is pretty static. After you have completed all three dificulties there is nothing to do but farm. I'm trying out the Underworld mod now but so far (2/3 through Act 1) it is identical.

A few years ago, I setup my wife as a Spirit + Earth. She had no idea what the game was about; can't read or understand English that well; and still beat the game by herself. Even now when she's bored she'll still ask me to reinstall the game for her to play. But with all the bugs and hardware killing anomalies (killed one of my HDD), I'll probably never reinstall it.

So beware of the bugs and glitches.

Having tried the Haruspex (Hunting/Dream) and Brigand (Hunting/Rogue), I much prefer the Brigand.

The poisons you can get ahold of combined with Hunting's natural multi-target skills can make certain areas much easier. To have some massive beast charge down on you only to be confused by Mandrake never gets old and the high DPS means they are cut down quickly too.
