I did not go outta my way to make these look fancy.

I absolutely hate how the default HDR/bloom settings wreck color in UT3, so aside from a couple, these were run at lowest world detail, which disables that crap.
So i guess you could say this is my UT3 (not necessarily how everyone would want it run).

Screenies were all taken @ 2560x1600 then resized 50%.

It hides the crappy detailing and zero effort put into building up the cliff walls.

Edit: assuming "low world detail" only disables the HDR/bloom etc and doesn't screw with textures etc as well.

Yeah, what with the lack of shading on the stone wall? It has an apperance that it's sharper than a knife. Looks a little unrealistic compared to todays standards.

It looks good, but it sure doesn't play like the original. However it's fun enough to buy it I think. I just can't wait to see what the community will create for the Invasion mode (provided there's one at all for UT3 ?). Since the mode I play the most in 2K4 is Invasion (Monster Madness server, it's the best there is).

Well I never had a problem with the look of the game, aside from the annoying fogginess of it all, but the craptastic gameplay and absolutely horrific interface forced me to uninstall the game.

Bloom and HDR can be beautiful features (Half-Life 2 Lost Coast with the HDR looks fantastic.), but I also don't like how many developers are really overdoing it.

Agreed. Oblivion was a little overboard as well as Test Drive Unlimited. Too irritating to view.
I prefer to turn it off, even if I have the horsepower to keep the framerates up.

remember, the first is lowest world detail. ech. at least if we are to believe the OP in that all shots, besides the shot with full post processing, are using the lowest setting for world detail.

personally, I love the second shot, the one with all the post processing. Why? well, it looks like crap in a screenshot, but it looks great in motion. I say this, because it's pretty close to some of the best post processing in terms of matching how our eyes behave. Games have typically been very flat, and that has been something I have always hated. I want full motion blur, I want depth of field, I want HDR. These are things that, when properly implemented, can make the game world seem close to the real world. Now, UT3 doesn't have the best implementation of that, but it gets relatively close. When you use the gun, if its anything like Crysis, what is in the sights and the immediate surroundings will be in focus, and the fore- and background will be blurry. That's natural depth of field. If the gun is going to be in focus on the screen, there is NO way the background far away will be in focus too. To me, that second shot with all the post processing makes the world feel that much more full of life and really makes what is in focus pop, just like in real life. Gives that feeling of depth and 3D-ness that we all crave in these modern engines.
The only problem, that will probably never be implemented due to the inability to control it as naturally as our own eye movements, is being able to change what we are focused on, on the fly. Pretty much impossible considering we can change focus pretty much instantly, with no thought. I guess they could have it change based on where the gun is pointing, and whatever is directly ahead of the barrel, be it 5 feet away, or 1000ft, would be in focus. HOWEVER, that isn't how our eyes operate and would seriously screw up gameplay, as we would be constantly scanning all over the screen, while the weapon points forward.

There has to be trade-offs, and I think that screenshot is a good example of trying to compensate. Crysis probably does that aspect better and more realistically, but that shot does look great in my mind. The gun looks like actual metal due to the HDR/bloom.

in my opinion the unreal engine 3 is the best looking game engine out there, even better than the cry engine 2 used on crysis. those screenshots do look pretty amazing. really looking forward to ut3 when it comes out.

Remember, the demo only enables medium settings. Wait for the full version if you are concerned about graphics.

The problem I have with the HDR/bloom is not so much with how it looks, but the fact that it hinders gameplay quite significantly. In the demo, I found myself often getting hit by crap that I never saw coming because the bloom from somewhere had completely obscured it, especially in the Shangrila map with its bright sky. I think any competitive player will want to turn that effect off purely for gameplay reasons.

bloom can add a lot to a scene but I don't think the artist in games I have seen so far are using it properly . There are lots of things that can add to a scene but things like specular, reflection, bloom have to be used carefully.

I've seen way too many titles lately that tend to go overboard with bump mapping and specular, making rocks look like plastic.
