Hey peeps,

I haven't kept up to date with the software scene lately, and I have a few questions about my upcoming system. I just ordered all my hardware, now I'm trying to figure out what to do about my software.

1. Is Win XP better than Win 2K???

2. With Win XP, will I be able to play games that came out 2-3 years ago? I want to play all the rainbow 6 stuf, quake 3, counterstrike, mirosoft flight simulator... and other games of that caliber.

3. Will I be able to play these games under win 2k???

4. I'm thinking of doing a dual boot, with win 2k and mandrake linux,... is this easy to do? I know I can order the cd's online for a very cheap price, but do they come with an installation manual??? Is it worth paying $70 for the 7-cd mandrake linux set???

5. What are some good things about mandrake linux?.. besides the fact that it's NOT microsoft.

6. Lastly, I looked at the screenshots of Mandrake 8.0, and I saw microsoft applications such as Word, and media player, etc etc runing on it. Do these apps come with Mandrake 8.0 ???? If not, how do I get them???

Thanks guys!

<< Hey peeps,

I haven't kept up to date with the software scene lately, and I have a few questions about my upcoming system. I just ordered all my hardware, now I'm trying to figure out what to do about my software.

1. Is Win XP better than Win 2K???

---> Probably in a lot of ways, but Win2k is more "mature". It has a couple of service packs to its credit and that's why I decided to use it instead.

2. With Win XP, will I be able to play games that came out 2-3 years ago? I want to play all the rainbow 6 stuf, quake 3, counterstrike, mirosoft flight simulator... and other games of that caliber.
---> Same answer as the last, but I'm not a gamer so I can't say. You have to ask the guys who play those games ---> go to the apps and games, etc. forum and post there.

3. Will I be able to play these games under win 2k???
---> They say you can play most games in Win2k OK. At least the games that have come out in the last year or two.

4. I'm thinking of doing a dual boot, with win 2k and mandrake linux,... is this easy to do? I know I can order the cd's online for a very cheap price, but do they come with an installation manual??? Is it worth paying $70 for the 7-cd mandrake linux set???
---> Dual boot setup seems like a walk in the park. Haven't done it but I've been reading about it and it sounds easy. See my post just made to this forum on dual booting for some ideas.

It depends on the game and also the drivers for you sound/video card. If you have decent drivers, then there shouldn't be any problem playing in 2K or even XP. I've played stuff like UT, both in my 2K and my Red Hat Linux.

Dual-booting is no prob and what you saw running was probably the WINE ("WINE Is Not an Emulator") program that will allow you to run a bunch of windoze apps in linux. Usually you'll have those apps already installed on a windoze partition, you boot to linux, mount the windoze partition, and then have WINE run the program's executable. I've been putzing around with the newer versions of WINE and have had Media Player work just fine. I even almost had Dreamweaver working except that I was trying to do it with the eval. I think it would have worked if I had the full install. Most of what I run in WINE is the windoze clients for different Distributed Computing apps.

With respect to XP, alot of people are trashing it but IMHO, except the WPA crap, it's not bad at all. And this is from someone who has been running 2K advanced server/Pro for over a year and a half.
