I recently lost my backpack...I left it at the table I was eating in a mall food court near work. I was frantic when I realized it was gone....it contained my calculus textbook, chemistry notes, and a paper for humanities in the main pocket, and an expensive discman, my Sony MDR-V700 DJ headphones, and maybe 20 CD's in the front pocket. I thought it was gone for good...until I received an email in my inbox about a week later. Someone found my backpack, took it home, and went to pretty great lengths to figure out who I was. He found my name on the paper, I have no idea where he got my school...might have had my professor's email address in there somewhere. Anyway, he went to Drexel's website, searched for my name, found my email, and emailed me telling me he'd found the backpack and asked how I'd like him to return it....I was incredibly shocked.

Just got off the line with Karma. She says you owe her bigtime.

You need to donate $12,871.63 to charity organizations, spend 3 years with Habitat for Humanity, and donate your left lung.

That is all. Have a nice day.

wow, cool.. i bet theres still a lot of good people out there. i know for a fact that if i found a back pack, i'd search through it, and assuming everything seemed legal return it to the owner. mostly because i know how happy i'd be if someone did that to me.

You should take the guy out to lunch or somethin.

I used to manage some computer labs at a university.
One day, I found a purse left in one of the labs.

In front of a couple of co-workers (so no one could claim I took anything...CYA was the name of the game there), I found an ID in the purse and looked up the lady's number.
Left a message that we had her purse, and where she could come pick it up.

She came in and was in tears, hugging me, saying I was an answer to a prayer.
Evidently...she had some BIG TIME cash in the purse, which was a deposit for her church (youth group thing I think)

She insisted I take every bit of cash that was HERS in her wallet, about $45.
I told her over and over that wasn't necessary, but she refused to take no for an answer.
So I took the $45, and gave it to charity.

A few years back in college I got had a message on my answering machine that some guy had found my calculator that I had left on the bus. The odd part about it all was that I hadn't lost my TI-85 calculator nor did I ride the bus. Anyway, I ended up calling the guy back and he said that my name was inscribed on the back of it. He looked me up on the student phonebook and gave me a call. Anyway, I ended up meeting up with the guy. I took a look at the calculator and sure enough, my name was on it. Turns out it was a calculator that I had stolen from me two years earlier. I guess the thief ended up losing it on the bus. I ended up letting the kid who found it keep it, I figured he had earned it.

There's good people. This summer, I saw a guy steal a beach bag from a fellower kayaker's site while he and his wife were out strolling. As they went over the narrow beach access, I chased down a beach patrol truck and pointed them out. They were arrested after a brief chase.

As it turns out, they had been stealing beach bags all day long. Some of the bags contained valuables, one contained a woman's heart medication! I read in the paper that week that every bag and item was recovered and returned to their owners.

If you ever come to Brigantine, NJ on warm summer weekend, I'm looking out for you. I might not be able to do much, but I will do everything that I can

Deeko, glad you found your bag

My friend lost his car keys on the mountain while snowboarding at Whiteface two weeks ago. Too bad no one found the keys, or if they did, they didn't return 'em. Just thought I'd share...

There's a lot more than a few. I believe the majority of people are good. Good samaritan stories just aren't as interesting.

I found a wallet in a parking lot once... it had a drivers license, credit cards, etc in it. i put it in a brown envelope, put the persons name & address on it, and put it in a mailbox... no return address, no postage. the post office WILL deliver it.

When I was in Japan, I found a wallet with over a $1000 in cash. Took it to the guys running the subway and took our names down. If no one claimed it after X weeks, it would have been ours, but someone did (good for them).

There are indeed some very good people out there, and it always makes me feel better when I meet them. Maybe they should run the parliaments.......

The majority of people are good, but I wish newspapers would print those stories more. Chicken Soup for the Soul series is a good example...
