A guy selling them out of a freezer in the bed of his truck, 10 oz steaks, 20 of them for $25 as I was on my way back home from the university.... Seems to good to be true. Ribeyes for that cheap sound scary..... Although many cattle ranchers live around here.

Anyone have any experience with traveling meat salesmen?

(I am not going to get any meat from the salesperson, I thought it would make for an interesting discussion, but there is indeed a guy selling this stuff as stated in the OP down the road))

I try to avoid buying meat from the back of people's trucks. That's just me though.

My friends sell meat out of his truck for money.

They rip people off for hundreds of dollars at a time. Literally.

EDIT:
They were even on the "buyers beware" part of our local news.
There were clips of people talking about how bad these two guys ripped them off, and I quote, "first he asked me if I had a freezer I could sell him, then next thing I know, I had spent $300 on meat that tasted like rubber".
Then it showed the reporter leaving voice mail messages on my friends cell phone.

We all got a pretty good kick out of it.

He would even make up fake names for his "company", and had a phone number that lead strait to a voice mail that he never checked.

Heh, I had some guys try this on me once. The whole "selling meat out of their cooler".

I told him I'd check my white van and get him some $2000 speakers for only 250 dollars.

Avoid.

A couple things to draw skepticism.

1) " A guy down the road"
2) Many rib-eyes (which are expensive) for the price of what you would expect to pay for a few.
3)The concept of "too good to be true"

I wouldn't buy it from a stranger, but we've bought bulk beef from people we know. Not alternator size, more like a quarter or half cow.

I guess none of the people who voted they wouldn't eat meat not inspected by the FDA have never had venison before.

You have to be careful buying anything that needs refrigeration off the side of the road. I have known people that bought shrimp and crab and both got real sick.

If it thaws at all and they refreeze it, it can go bad. I'll never take a chance.

Hey, if anything, ask the guy over for a barbeque and let you grill one steak up for both of you to try. If you like them, tell him you'll buy some.

I would like to know how these people went from selling a freezer to buying $300 worth of crappy meat.

"Man, I need a fridge to hold all this expensive ass meat or it'll go bad. Can I buy yours?"
"No man, its not for sale."
"Well, wanna take these choice cuts off my hands for cheap?"
Profit??
