A little good news, and perhaps reason to wait on purchasing additional DDR that you don't need quite yet, as prices should be dropping in the coming months. However, if you need SDRAM, according to the article, due to lower production levels, the price is heading upwards. The same thing happened when mfg's started to phase out EDO DRAM, although now it is cheap again, as no current motherboards use it.

Should have done that a year or year and a half ago.

I looked up my first DDR purchase and got 2 256MB sticks of DDR PC2100 for $33 a piece.

Just remember to be careful putting over 512 or 768 megs into a win 95/98 machine. Bad things can happen (which can usually be worked around if you follow the proper steps in various MS knowledge articles, part of which can involve editing files to tell windows to basically ignore in some fashion, some of the extra memory) . Any other win should be ok though.

That's a 256mbit, not megabyte. You buy a few of those and put them on a PCB and then you have a memory chip.

No problem. Set up a fab plant to make memory PCB's using a number of the 256 megabit chips (4 or 8 or so), then you finally end up with a standard memory type like DDR.

Oh yeah, and purchase a few thousand at a time

If i understand correctly, wouldnt a 256MB chip need 8 of those 256Mb chips + PCB? that'd be $6 * 8 = $48 at least.

Correct. If you're interested in tracking this sort of thing, dramexchange.com is a nice site. Once or more a day price tracking, and they have a very nice price graph. I think that to see the fullsize graph, nicely done in flash, you need a membership, but its free(and spamfree) since it costs them next to nothing compared to what they get when a few of their customers arrange sales through them(they have a "spot market" brokerage type thing).

It already seems like there's quite a few deals around for PC2100, it's the PC2700 that I'd like to see drop in price. Crucial, as an example, sells 256mb of PC2700 for $67.49 right now. That seems to be about twice as much as slower DDR right now.

Huh? If you're looking at their web site, the cheapest 256 stick of PC2100 is $64.79. Not much of a difference at all.

So, I paid $300.00 for 1 Meg of Dram chips in 1986

$600 for a 16MB EDO SIMM in Jan 1995....

First memory "upgrade" was a Tandy kit, comprised of a separate add-in card and dozen of those damn 8byte (yes byte) chips that you had to mount yourself onto the card to get a 256Byte memory upgrade to the Tandy 1000HX.... (circa 1985)

.... after walking to the Radio Shack store, in the snow, uphill both ways!

Actually, the kit upgrade was for real, the snow wasn't (I was stationed in Louisiana at the time )

Right, for Crucial that's correct. But if you follow the deals here and at FW, it seems (at least to me) that more deals pop-up for 2100 than the faster DDR.

Check this thread... as an example. Or do a search for "2100." More of the retailers tend to stock the slower DDR RAM right now, which leads to hot deals
