Abstinence works for me.

Works for you, in what way? Prevents you from contracting disease? There are less extreme ways of doing that, like using condoms.

Obviously you haven't had one of them break in mid stroke! I guess that tells it all! They simply aren't safe.

You guys who are seriously promoting abstinence: Please refrain from having sex and reproducing. Thanks.

Condoms don't prevent you from contracting disease. Why are you spreading disinformation that could put people at risk?

Using condoms (consistently) is effective in reducing risk of HIV transmission, according to US government.

Condoms reduce the risk of transmission of some other STDs, depending on the nature of transmission of the std in question.

Genital ulcer diseases...

Nor do condoms prevent the transmission of the influenza virus. So what? Hide in your room?

Abstinence would work but it directly defies human nature. Our impulses are to have sex, and whereas I do believe we need to be more responsible about it, I still feel that ultimately it will fail. Visit a youth church group when the adults aren't there, abstinence my arse! I got laid more by church girls than anyone else when I was actually going to one.

human nature? that's just it. as thinking beings we have a duty to our species to exercise responsibility with privilage. i have a desire to eat chocolate pie for breakfast, but if i wanna live past 45, then i'll exercise some control, and have it sporatically, within the confines of a balanced diet. not because eating pie is a sin, but cuz the regulation of such is essential if i wanna use this body for any length of time.

you just stressed the importance of moderation, so why can't sex be moderated??? why can't it be doled out as part of a healthy lifestyle? this is what is usually taught, 1 partner for a period of time, no 1 night stands, etc... in order to develop a healthy relationship

you didn't say anything about abstaining from your chocolate pie, now did you?

no, i didn't.... but one piece of chocolate pie isn't gonna cost me my life like one piece of a$$ might. see the difference?

OF COURSE one piece of chocolate pie could cost you your life. People CHOKE AND DIE eating everyday foods. The odds of this are admittedly low. But there is a risk attached to almost everything we do. People are killed in automobile accidents every day. Going to stop driving your car? Or are you going to manage your risks (by driving within the speed limit, wearing a seat belt, keeping your breaks maintained, and not DUI-ing)? Similarly it's possible to manage the risk associated with sex in a variety of ways (consistent condom use, monogamous relationships, etc).

Condoms are not recommended for preventing:

Genital ulcer diseases -- genital herpes, syphilis, and chancroid -- and human papillomavirus are primarily transmitted through contact with infected skin or mucosal surfaces.
While some epidemiologic studies have demonstrated lower rates of HPV infection among condom users, most have not. It is particularly difficult to study the relationship between condom use and HPV infection because HPV infection is often intermittently detectable and because it is difficult to assess the frequency of either existing or new infections. Many of the available epidemiologic studies were not designed or conducted in ways that allow for accurate measurement of condom effectiveness against HPV infection.
Protection against genital ulcer diseases and HPV depends on the site of the sore/ulcer or infection. Latex condoms can only protect against transmission when the ulcers or infections are in genital areas that are covered or protected by the condom. Thus, consistent and correct use of latex condoms would be expected to protect against transmission of genital ulcer diseases and HPV in some, but not all, instances.

Hey Rip, selectiving pointing out what you want people to hear...

How about

Condoms can help prevent:

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), as well as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis -- the discharge diseases -- are transmitted when infected semen or vaginal fluids contact mucosal surfaces (e.g., the male urethra, the vagina or cervix).

from the same article, just above the part that you selectively quoted? Oh, those must not be diseases in your book...sorry.

"Condoms can help prevent" means that you can still get those diseases even with condom use.

Yes. And so it comes down to risk management. All people take measured risks (e.g., like eating a chicken sandwich - you risk salmonella poisoning if chicken isn't fully cooked). But you need accurate info to assess risk. That's why Bush's abstinence programs are so appalling. They deprive people of information that could save their lives.

Yes, and when you eat, you can choke or get food poisoning. When you swim, you can drown. When you shower, traverse stairs, or work on a ladder, you can fall and strike your head. When you go to work, school, or church, you can die in a traffic accident. So what? Normal, rational people do not strive to remove all risk from their daily lives. They strive to find a reasonable balance between risk and reward, between cowering in a bomb shelter and living a full and happy life.

In reality, you don't really care about pregnancy and STDs. You simply want to impose your own repressive Puritan morality on others. Since you're not my partner, kindly stay the hell out of my bedroom (and living room, kitchen, back yard, or anywhere else I choose to engage in legal, consensual sexual activities). The same applies to others' children. Screw up your own kids if you must. Butt out of everyone else's lives.

K, thanks.

What he said.
