i assume a lot of you are playing wow...can you do me a favor, and in dalaran or flying in storm peaks, while all the graphics are tuned on high...do a fast camera turn, and post if you have fps drop, i.e. stutter like there is something loading from the hard disk...view distance and everything must be at max...post your spec too if it isnt too much trouble

also if you had this problem and solved it, let me know cause its a bit annoying

thanks

I have this problem. I was using an 8800GTX before my current card, and that had the problem as well.

Only seems to happen outside, and with many objects around (players, trees, NPCs). I dip down into the low to mid 20s FPS wise sometimes.

I definitely had this problem on my X2 A64 @3.0, 4GB, 4850, vistsa x64.

Haven't played the game since upgrading to e5200@3.5, 4GB, 9600GSO SLI, vista x64.

Its a common issue.. I've heard/seen it discussed before.

I have this problem in some areas and it's only when I swing the camera around to look for something. One place that was really annoying was Borean Tundra, the snow covered section near the water. Every time I would pan around, the video would stutter.

e6750, 2GB PC6400, 8800GTS 512MB, WD 640GB. Playing @ 1680x1050.

Dalaran especially when it's very busy is hard on my system.

I don't think it's a video problem though. WoW is very CPU intensive, plus it is loading a ton of crap off the hard drive when you log into Dalaran especially when there are a lot of people.

Would it benefit from a 64-bit OS and gobs of RAM? Or JUST CPU? Do more than 2 cores help?

(I might get into this game but I hate stutter.)

It's only bad in a few areas. Otherwise the game runs smooth as glass for me. I don't think WoW is multi-threaded or if it is it needs more work. I'm sure a core i7 with 6GB of ram and a SSD would improve things but I don't have such resources to test for this.

ok thanks everyone:
this is my setup
phenom2 940@3.7
XFX 4870 1GB xxx
8gb 1066 ram

a couple of observations...i tried 9800GT and it is not stuttering, although the framerates are almost halved, so its choppy anyways
i tried GTX260 and it is not stuttering also...but there is one huge nvidia bug where something all of the sudden in the screen gets slowdown in rendering so like when i turn north its 5 fps, and when i turn south, standing on the same spot, i get 60

also vista-64 bit seems smoother than win7 64-bit with 9.3

i tried g.skill 64gb SSD and its the right thing for wow

sorry taltamir its not really a classic poll, but n00b one

As noted it is only in a few select parts of the game and Blizz has been known to fix areas that do that. 3.1 is going to be one of the largest patches ever released for the game.

I've had this issue with an X2 6400+ paired with both an 8800 GTX and a GTX 260 (192) on XP. The only "fix" was basically to disable the graphics improvements implemented prior to Wrath - putting the landscape view distance slider on about 60-70% and putting the shadow quality slider to the far left (the blob shadows the game has always had vs. dynamic). Once I do that the game is back to the "max" settings it ran smooth on before Wrath was released.

I'd like to answer this, but really there are a ton of varriables you lef out.

If I'm in Dal, on a weekend evening hell yeah I get stuttering, although how much of it is due to network, how much to CPU, RAM or Vid I couldn't say. OTOH, I go to Dal at say 2am on a Tuesday, like buttah.

I don't think WoW is multi-threaded

It is multi threaded, that patch hit sometime between Naxx40 and TBC IIRC(it's been multi core for I think a couple of years now). Was kind of bummed at first, multi core processors are capped at 60FPS unless you set the application to only run on one core- that said the minimums improved rather significantly in raids so in the end it was well worth it.

I had this problem. Only fix was turning down the view distance. My guess was not enough video ram.

I had terrible FPS in Dalaran in general-- 26fps average with my rig? Puhlease! Lowering resolution did not help. Their engine is showing it's age.

This. You could have a rig that far exceeds the recommended specs, not even have your settings all set to the highest, and the game will still chug at certain points. The game engine is not optimized well, and it shows.

Games from 2004 should not chug on modern hardware, yet WOW does consistently.
