A "My Internship sucks" rant

I made a mistake. I have plenty of job experience. I should not have taken an internship because it's not going to teach me anything. For instance, I have been there three days already and done nothing (well I did look at their web page). I basically check my email and chat a bit with the other workers. It's a small company and there are 5 of us in one room. I didn't show up Friday morning because they said my schedule was "whatever I wanted it to be", but my "manager" calls me asking if I am coming in. I said I was thinking of it, but didn't know if they had anything for me to do. I am a hard days work for a day's pay kind of person. I hate being stuck at a job doing nothing and getting paid for it. He said I'll give you some work, so come on in.

I get there, and he spends an hour telling me what their network looks like
Then he gives me some SQL routines and tells me to document them. Coolio there, but I begin to ask him questions about what he wants and he is very evasive. Basically it's just busy work and I took about 2 hours to write 3 paragraphs because I know he isn't going to look at it and I am not motivated.

At this point, I am wondering if it's a good idea to quit now and say it wasn't a match, or if I should be patient. I still have no idea what my role is, and I am treated like a piece of furniture. If this is what internships are like, I am not interested. They made it seem very interesting in the interview, said I would be doing all sorts of stuff. I don't need the experience on my resume, I just wanted to get back into the working swing before I graduate in the summer and look for jobs. Ugh! Plus if I give the job back, a college student who needs the experience for their resume could get it instead of me. I would rather watch paint dry than go back in that office again.

That's just it. I have many years experience already. I was *looking* to intern with a company in hopes there might be a job at the end of it. But they said they cannot guarantee a job, being a small company and all. I took it even so because the job description was cool, only to find out they lied and I won't be doing anything remotely interesting. I guess I will talk to my advisor on Monday

I had a great internship at Compaq junior year. I was in the lab bringing up systems and also did mobo testing, and some microsoldering.
And there were tonnes of intern activities like going to amusement parks, museums, shows, movies, games, restaurants, tours. Freebies galore and $20/hr pay too. And they had noon meetings with catering, so you could get the free food after the meeting ends. The fridge in the lab was stocked with sodas, smoothies, sandwiches.

Quit. Why stay at a job when it's nothing like what they described and there is no future involved?

Well because I accepted the job and have a hard time quitting so quickly. I want to give it a chance, but I do feel like they were misleading. I know I should just quit but I am stubborn about finishing something I start lol.

Why don't you tell your manager exactly what you just tell us here? (not motivated, nothing to do, ready to quit)

If nothing changes afterwards, then go ahead and quit...

I mean, if you are ready to quit, I doubt you care how your relationship with this company turns out...

He knows how I feel after I told him I wouldn't come in unless he had something for me to do. So I think he is trying but it's becoming obvious the internship is worthless.

Bah I think I'll just quit and not feel guilty about it at all

i am working two internships right now. One is unpaid and one is paid. The unpaid one i do driver testing and the paid one I do software testing. I think you would be surprised by how many people that would want to take your place and do the job. A rule that I follow is that more work experience wont hurt you because it gives u an advantage. Just stick to it because your job will because different as you handle more responsibilities.

Word around my campus is that the top compsci co-op positions pay 55-65k year and work around your class schedule... If I can land that, be the job worthless or not, I think I'm driving a viper (used 10k miles lol) to the 5th HS reunion

It's all about what's important to you...

They seem to have no direction for you. They are also seemingly shady as well.
If you arn't getting paid, and it really does not have a net gain for you, then there isn't much being lost in leaving and pursuing other ventures.
Just don't burn bridges.

Oh the internship pays about 10 bucks an hour. The money would be ok I guess, could pay off some of my debt. So the job is not without some benefits, it's just that I have to sit there for 15 hours a week staring at my computer doing word documents or browsing email. And that's not what I was led to believe what it was. Joy!

Well damn I worked for the wrong companies then. I always had LOADS of work at my RL jobs and didn't get paid a lot for them either.

Hehe yeah I guess I could get used to doing nothing, just used to being really productive.
