i have a 1ghz tbird 266 and an epox 8k7a motherboard.
right now i have an Alpha PAL6035 with a 16 CFM fan. and a case fan on the front blowing in, and the p/s fan blowing out.

the readings from the bios say that the cpu is 56 celcius. i know that this is lower than the actual temp, cuz its below. i used arctic silver ii on it, but i dunno if i did it properly. is this temp too high? what can i do to make the airflow better to dec temp? i dont wanna fry this new ddr setup

help!

That temp is not neccesaraly to high, but it's not low either. I would add another fan to the rear of the case blowing outward. I would also get a better HSF of your choice.

Or you could keep your case off like me all the time ....make sure you dust every couple weeks though

my 120 isn't on right now, and my temp went up 3 degrees when i put an additional 100w on it(bought a new psu)

You should have only a very thin coat of compound on. Use a razor blade of a credit card to spread it. 16 cfm is very low for the fan. If you attach a fan with at least double the cfm you should see quite a reduction in your temp. Lapping the HS could give you another couple of degrees drop. Finally a program like Cpucool could also drop your temps quite a bit. Dropped my idle 10c and my full load 5c.

what's the BOARD TEMP??? That's important, because the temp difference between m/b and CPU would show how good your HSF works.

My Volcano2 works pretty good on 1.2Ghz, 22c board, 37c CPU right now....not underload.

If your BOOTUP temperature is 56c then that's definitely too high, especially for a 1Ghz chip. If your board temp's also high, then give more case ventilation. But if it's low, then you need to remount the HSF, maybe something's not right there. Even a thick layer of AS2 shouldn't cause this.

ok, the board temp is 24C
the cpu is now down to 46C or so.
i am not willing to replace the alpha, i just bought it and cant afford a new one.
new fans are an option, but where do i put them? how to i calc airflow to do it properly, etc?
