If it's an artist I particularly like, I'd have pre-ordered it long before it came out (unless it's a remix or best-of CD, which I don't count as albums).

If it's a band I love and respect, I will go buy the album because I know I will enjoy it. If it's a band I like, I'll download a few tracks and decide if it's worth my $15.

I listen to mp3s and rip the mp3s to CDs, but I'm not satisfied with the sound quality of either. If I like the music I buy the CD.


Then if my wife likes the music she'll buy the cd, then she'll misplace it and take mine and I'll have to buy another.

Actually there have been 3 CD's that came out last year that I actuall bought, and really wanted to anyway.

Tool - Lateralus
SOAD - Toxicity
Static-X - Machine

 

I got four albums online weeks before they came out. I like them so much I will go buy them.

I just download the album, and then either feel guilty about screwing over a good band, or I justify my stealing with bad excuses. honest.

Here's another scenario. Download the album off of a file-sharing service and listen to that until you can find the album used. I've done that many times. I simply have too many CDs to pay full price for new ones, so MP3s are a good way to "hold me over" until I can find the albums used and more realistically priced.

There is an alternative to buying "used". About 3 times a year, the BMG Music record club (NOT to be confused with Columbia) holds really excellent sales . . . the last time (early December) I bought 22 discs for $149 ($6.77 a disk, including shipping).

Their only fault is that it take quite awhile for BMG to get the very latest music from some labels. (Once you get over the initial membership requirements of buying "one at full price" to get the 12 free, there are no more "automatic shipments".)

My rule is if the band is on an independent label I always buy the CD, otherwise I don't. My last major label purchase was... hmm, I guess Offspring's Ixnay on the Hombre in '97.

Of course the Bad Religion album I've been listening to for the past 2 months doesn't come until January, so I'll have to wait on that one.
